MIDDLESBROUGH v ARSENAL - THE HARRY HAVERTON METHOD
He's back. Miusoccer I mean and I'm going to take him on head to head in September for the four Boro games. The pro against the amateur. Teesside's number one against the mouthy southy...
And that scenario bears an uncanny resemblance to this week's fixture, with Boro cast firmly as the underdogs. And rightly so.
Since Steve McClaren joined the club, we have played eight Premiership matches against Arsenal and lost the lot. 'Nuff said.
Much as I'd obviously like it to happen, I can't see us reversing that trend on Saturday but this is not about my opinion.
It's about carefully selecting the feasible outcomes and playing the odds to best effect. Unless there is some sort of a freak scoreline, you will almost certainly collect on Saturday night, if you follow the instructions carefully and to the letter.
So putting all prejudice aside, let's have a look at what could reasonably happen on Saturday afternoon?
An Arsenal win has to be top of the list and it could be 1-0 or it could be a massacre. A draw is possible and so is a Boro win but realistically, your only safe bet is another demoralising Boro defeat.
But because the possibility is real but slight, we are only going to put the minimum on those two outcomes so that in the unlikely event of them occurring, we get at least some of our money back.
Let's start with a straightforward £280. At this stage I must point out that big shots like myself don't bother with small stakes. We're so immune to the excitement level that we need to bet big. That's what they told me at Gambler's Anonymous anyway...
I offered them 4/1 that it was not true and they wouldn't take me up on it so they must have been bluffing...
If you are only looking for a small flutter and don't want to roll with the high stakes, you can still follow my advice but instead of staking £280, just bet a total of £28 and divide all my selections by ten.
But be advised that the outcome will be affected because of the free £10 bet that you will qualify for. Even so, you should still turn out a winner, even if you do lower the stakes.
I'm having seven bets this week and I'm taking five of them on the correct score for an Arsenal win. Here's my selections.
Arsenal 1-0 @ 6/1
Arsenal 2-0 @ 7/1
Arsenal 2-1 @ 7/1
Arsenal 3-0 @ 12/1
Arsenal 3-1 @ 11/1
Just keep your fingers crossed that The Gunners don't beat Charlton's Riverside goalscoring record this season.
All we need to do now is cover the Boro win @ 10/3 and the draw @ 12/5.
£40 on each of those outcomes gives you a return of £173.34 in the event of a Boro win and £136. It's not a profit but it's a cushion that allows you to come back and fight another day should the unexpected occur.
And another bonus is that if you do all of the above, you qualify for a free £10 bet from Corals. But obviously, you need to open an account with them to qualify by clicking the banner below.
What you do with your free bet depends on how you feel about the game. I decided to follow my instincts and take the 4/6 straight Arsenal win. It's another extra bonus if I am right and a cushion if we get severely thrashed by more than three.
Let's see what occurs at tea-time on Saturday. I'll either be down the Bongo celebrating or banging on the door of the Seaman's Mission on Sunday morning and I'm not talking about David either.
