LET'S MAKE HISTORY 12-8-05

Here we are at last. It's the eve of a brand new season and it's one that promises to be the most successful of the modern era. All we need to do to make it a record breaker is finish sixth in the Premier League and get to the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup.

Both targets must be the minimum acceptable standard of achievement for Middlesbrough this season. Anything less would be a huge disappointment.

There are chances to put 2005/06 into the history books available in the FA Cup and Carling Cup. However, last season, we clearly targeted one trophy, the UEFA Cup. Lip service only was paid to the FA and Carling Cups and we should probably expect the same this season.

This season as a whole is another important step in our development. Champions League ambitions have been talked about openly and maybe this is the season to actually qualify for the competition of competitions? Everton did it last season so why can't Boro this time around?

Long term supporters could easily some up with a hundred reasons why not but the truth is that we have a squad that can rival any team in the league, when at full strength. We showed what we can do in Europe last season and we can easily better that performance during this campaign.

A good performance in the major competitions will make us an attractive propostion to players of the calibre we missed out on this time around and the financial situation should be healthy when the transfer window reopens, due to our numerous live appearances.

Too many live appearances may well reduce the attendance and atmosphere inside the stadium but if Sky TV are our largest source of income and we have to choose between a full stadium and that massive cashpile, then there really is no choice.

For now, I am thankful that the financial ship is steaming forward. Success on the pitch will fill the empty seats in the stadium.

Despite reports to the contrary, Boro rounded off the summer by making two quality signings. Having secured the signatures of both Stewart Downing and Steve McClaren, the club must be in a positive mood going into a massive fixture tomorrow. Our fifth summer signing should be George Boateng.

George says he wants to stay. The club say they want to keep him. So stop messing around. Just get the contract signed, today. Because we have business on the field to take care of tomorrow.

Sing your hearts out for the lads.

Until next week.

Steve
