THANK YOU STEVE McCLAREN
Briggsy
No doubt people will say no manager is bigger than the club and I agree fully. But that doesn't mean you can't be somewhat disappointed when a manager leaves, more so the clubs most successful manager!
Despite failing to capture the hearts and minds of a many fans, what he has achieved will go down in Middlesbrough folklore, leaving lasting memories which will no doubt be passed down for generations to come.
As I'm sure most of you know I was a big admirer of the work McClaren has done at this football club and I'm sad to see him leave. But as one door closes another one opens for someone else. The Middlesbrough job is a fantastic job.
I have full faith that Steve Gibson will appoint the right man for the job, because the decision he has to make now is a massive one and I am slightly worried where we go from here. I'm a great believer in consistency, especially when the current structure in place is actually moving us forward. We have moved forward as a club in each and every season under McClaren. England have gone with consistency notion and I hope Steve Gibson has the same in mind when appointing a new successor.
For me very little has to change at the club and that's a great testament to what McClaren has achieved here. When he took over the club was in a mess, let's not beat about the bush. The transformation in McClaren's time here is nothing more than incredible. He's brought great structure, professionalism, success, hope and given the fans a club to be proud of.
One thing I find disappointing about McClaren's reign here, is the lack of support he has got from sections of the Boro faithful, despite what he's achieved. But sadly some people seem to be under the illusion that the next manager will almost certainly do better than McClaren. There are no guarantees in football, If only it was that black and white.
The next manager has a lot to live up to and will be under more scrutiny than any previous Boro manager. But still I hope these people are right that they see a guaranteed brighter future after McClaren. I'm sure the Anti-Mac brigade will be even quicker to jump on the next managers back than they did McClaren. But I guess that's the beauty of football, it's all about opinions.
The club is in a much healthier position now than before McClaren took over. When Robbo left there was little interest in the Middlesbrough job but now there will be a host of big names in football throwing themselves at the club. That's another testament to the work McClaren, his staff and Gibson have done at the club. But still big decisions need to be made to ensure everything we've achieved in the last five years is built on.
I'd like to wish McClaren all the best in his new job and I'm sure he will just have as much success with England as he did with Boro. What a way to bow out, if he wins the UEFA cup next week even the sternest anti-McClaren fans will certainly be singing his name from the Teesside roof tops.
Thank you Steve McClaren.
