MIDDLESBROUGH MANAGER ODDS PREVIEW 6-5-06
Christopher Bean
With the ginger one deciding to go and coach the national team, a vacancy has arisen at the home of north-east football, the Riverside Stadium.
Plenty of betting websites are now taking bets on who should be the next man at the Middlesbrough helm and I will take you through some of the front runners telling you where the best prices are, and some novelty bets as well.
MARTIN O'NEILL
The man who broke thousands of Boro Fans hearts in 1997 in the Coca Cola Cup final is currently leading the pack with the majority of bookmakers. O'Neill has not had a managerial job since leaving the Celtic post last year so he could look after his sick wife. O'Neill has recently been favourite for every single job under the sun including England, Ireland, Newcastle, Manchester United, and the director general of the BBC. With Victor Chandler he is as short as 7/4, but the best price is with Coral, where you can get 4/1 for your money.
TONY MOWBRAY
The prodigal son and fan's favourite Tony Mowbray is a candidate who is confusing the bookies. On some sites he is not listed, on some he is favourite and has rather long odds on the others. The best price you can get on Mogga at the moment is 8/1 with Victor Chandler. Earlier in the day he was quoted at 12/1. Big money is going on him so I suggest you get your money on him quick before the odds go tumbling. To give you an indication of what other sites are offering; he is currently 3/1 on Coral.
ALAN CURBISHLEY
After his shock resignation from Charlton Athletic, his decision to jack in his position at The Valley is being questioned. It is not widely beleived that he has done it to spend more time with his family but to further his managerial credentials. With the Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough hot seats currently vacant, you have to presume he will be coming to the North East, and his current odds are confirming the bookie's worries over it. He is currently priced between 5/1 and 6/1 on Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Victor Chandler, Playboy Sportbook, Sky Bet, and Coral.
SAM ALLARDYCE
With Big Sam almost literally getting down on his hands and knees and promising oral services to Brian Barwick live on national television, you would think the Bolton board would not be to impressed and could well oust him in the Summer. So will Allardyce swap his intentions on Brian Barwick to looking for a house in Ingelby Barwick? Well it's a good possibility, with the majority of bookmakers quoting 8/1. But the best price you can get is with Sky Bet who are offering a tasty 12/1.
GARETH SOUTHGATE
The current Middlesbrough captain highlighted his intentions of one day becoming a football manager, and who can blame him? He is a natural leader with a cool, collective assertiveness about him and could easily make the transition to a manager. But will Middlesbrough be his first appointment? Well it is confusing the hell out of the bookies as the prices are ranging wider than Rik Waller's waistline. Ladbrokes and Playboy Sportbook are currently offering a low 12/1, but Paddy Power is offering a huge 33/1, which is worth a couple of quid of anyone's money.
IAN DOWIE
There have been reports recently that Steve Gibson is an admirer of the Crystal Palace manager, who has done wonders at a club with a very limited budget. He is a good man manager, which Gibson probably likes most and it reflects well with the bookies. The current best price is 12/1 at Paddy Power and Ladbrokes. I would get a bet in rather sharpish, as I can see these odds shortening very soon.
ERTUGRUL SAGLAM
A surprise Turkish candidate has come into the rankings. Ertgrul Saglam of Turkish club Kayserispor is now in the running for the Middlesbrough job. Saglam was recently included in a top twenty list of the most promising managers in Europe, published in a leading European football publication. Kayserispor are currently challenging for third place in the Turkish league and could very well be a surprise success story in the Premiership. Not many bookies have picked up on this eastern delight with only Coral taking bets with odds currently at 15/1.
AND NOW FOR THE NOVELTY CANDIDATE!
Well you always get them, and some people are daft enough to put some money on them as well! But it is only right to have a look at the bookmakers' daft choice. And it is a former Middlesbrough player who is most famous for crashing the team coach into a building. Yes, you guessed it, Mr Paul Gascoigne himself. Of course he has had managerial experience at the mighty Kettering, but to be frank he was rubbish and the 200/1 odds Paddy Power is offering reflects that.
Well that is the latest on the Middlesbrough manager odds, but we will update if any other candidates come into the running. Please also note that these odds are correct when they were written. They could fluctuate quite easily.
