THE GREAT TICKET PRICE DEBATE 19-1-07
Stuart Ward

The price of being able to see one's team at Stamford Bridge has been set. £48 per person.

To this writer this is, simply put, ridiculous.

There has been a debate raging about the rights and wrongs of this. People putting forward statistics, people putting forward heart-felt feelings. I have made my mind up. I am going with the feelings side of things.

A few questions spring into my mind.

Firstly, are Chelsea REALLY good enough entertainment to warrant charging people from one of the poorest areas of the country £48 per ticket?

I feel the answer is no. They play boring, unattractive football, relying on power and strength to get them through. Arsenal charged £32 and they play the most attractive football in the Premier League. This is in fact cheaper than Boro charged for the visit of Manchester United.

Speaking of which, Manchester United also play great football. Stuff that is good to watch, entertainment value for the fans, both their own AND the travelling supporters.

In my view, when I go to an away match, it is about the whole experience. Meeting up with people, having some beer, a bit of banter with the opposition fans. This is usually expensive enough as it is. But when a mega-rich club like Chelski start to hike their prices, it fast become unattainable for a lot of poorer fans.

I really don't care for all the statistics provided to say that everything is more expensive in London. Why does this mean that us "paupers" from up North should be ripped off too?

Chelsea appear to be the only team in London hiking their prices, as shown by the fact that the one team everyone would actually pay to see every week, Arsenal, are charging a relatively reasonable amount.

Chelsea are a mega-club. Their chairman will ALWAYS be a man who is making money, no matter what he does due to his decidedly nefarious links in Russia and his obscene bank balance.

Why, then, are they charging so much? Greed is the only way to describe it. They no longer care about the fans, and as such are now damaging the English game.

There has to be a way to stop this, a way to keep them in line. I for one won't pay their stupid prices. I would much rather watch it down the pub with my mates thank you Mr Abramovich.

In conclusion, keep your statistics thanks anyway, and stop charging so much you filthy rip off merchants.
