LEST WE FORGET 4-10-06
Stuart Thompson

It's been a while now since I felt as low as I do about my team and our prospects.

I reckon the short-term future is going to hold a little more heartache than joy, but I'm pretty sure I can live with that.

Don't get me wrong, the latest humiliation at home hurts like hell, and the trepidation I feel regarding our visit to the classless, yet determined, basement boys, is entirely justified.

But I've felt like this before. I'm a Boro fan. In fact, I've felt a sight worse. I've gone to many, many games, not nervous, not unsure, not fearful. I've been to twenty games (at least) when I knew we would be battered. AND WE WERE.

The beauty of NEW Boro is that we are at a different level. We expect a lot, that's true, but we no longer expect the worst. This is a massive stride forward, and we should continue to recognise this. When things don't work first time, we as supporters of the club should show patience and belief.

This is nearly impossible to do, because every defeat, or disjointed performance, hurts like hell.

Why are our expectations so high? Do we deserve it? Yes we do! Every genuine Boro fan deserves his team's commitment. Every time they pretend to understand our pride, yet deliver cowardly performances, we have a right to show our displeasure.

Too often I hear that we have "too little class" or "he's a local lad, but he can't cut it". I want eleven local heroes, wherever their origins. I want eleven classless warriors, if they can show my pride and passion for the shirt.

But they also demand. They demand and deserve a loyal and united following that will set the example. The example of Teesside fortitude that makes these travelling jobsworths feel obliged to perform, and (within their reach) become part of Teesside folklore.

We must never boo our team. We should always be dissatisfied with cowardly displays, but most of all, we should demonstrate the unswerving courage and hardened steel that we demand from our football club.

Up the Boro!

Tommo
