Germany's 6th biggest city
Stuttgart is the capital city of the State of Baden-Württemberg in the south-west of Germany. It is the sixth largest city in Germany with a population of 590,000. The next nearest major cities are Frankfurt and Munich.
Bad Cannstatt
The largest and oldest district of Stuttgart is Cannstatt. It was the site of a major Roman castle on the Neckar and an important crossroads. Today, it is also the location of the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium.
Stud farm city
Stuttgart itself was established as a stud farm (Stutengarten) in the 10th century and became a city in the 13th century. The industrial revolution took the city into the machine age, before it was largely levelled in the Second World War.
Capital of a new State
Stuttgart was part of the American zone after the War and in 1952 was made capital of the newly formed State of Baden-Württemberg, which borders France and Switzerland. Since then, the city has regained its status as a place that makes things happen.
The State's position within Germany
The city is now renowned as a centre of industrial and high-tech excellence, with many major companies based here, including DaimlerChrysler, Porsche, Bosch, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, plus as many as 150,000 SMEs.
Universities, radio, TV and regional press
The academic and media worlds are also well represented in Stuttgart, with the country's highest concentration of scientific, academic and R&D institutions as well as being home to regional broadcaster SWR (South West Broadcasting) and the 'Stuttgarter Zeitung', one of Germany's most widely read regional newspapers.
Wine and green spaces
Stuttgart is also a centre for local wine production, with vineyards stretching almost right into the city. In fact, the city boasts many green areas (such as the park extending from the city centre to Cannstatt and the football ground) and is surrounded on several sides by thick woodland.
Attractions
If you like cars, you'll like Stuttgart! Right next to the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium is the DaimlerChrysler works, which includes the impressive Mercedes Museum. That's just one of the city's tourist attractions and you can check it out whilst you are there.
