PEREZ SLAGS OFF MIDDLESBROUGH 24-11-05

Unheard of Alkmaar striker Kenneth Perez had a right old pop at the Boro last night.

The 31 year-old said Boro should be pushing for the Champions League every season with the cash chairman Steve Gibson gives boss Steve McClaren.

The Danish international blasted: "Middlesbrough are a club with very average players who have unwisely spent a gigantic amount of money over the years. When you see how much money they have spent, and are still spending, then they should be in the top five in the Premiership."

"It's unbelievable the club's policy. Spending all that money on older, over-the-top players based on reputations. Of course the really top players won't go to Middlesbrough so they have to pay top money for less quality."

"Last year we played Glasgow Rangers in the UEFA Cup and that was exactly the same. A big name but a poor team. The reality is that the real star players won't go to Rangers, Middlesbrough or come to Holland. We have to be innovative and AZ are doing that by developing young players."

Totally ignoring Middlesbrough's outstanding youth policy, the Scandinavian gob-shite said that AZ are built on stronger principles than the Boro.

"We have another philosophy, another healthier long-term strategy. We have an excellent youth system and in the transfer market we specifically target young players. These young players are hungry and with good coaching they can be stars. I find it unbelievable that club owners spend all that money on players who are over the hill."

The ageing Perez has clearly failed to realise that if AZ's youth policy was so great, then there would be no place in the team for average over-the-hill wannabes such as himself.

AZ's midfield playmaker Barry van Galen had better things to say about Middlesbrough.

Youthful Galen, 35, admitted: "Maybe we can play better football but they are physically stronger and will compete with a purpose. In pre-season we played Sunderland here and although they are not Premiership high-fliers, that was difficult enough."

Both Barry and Kenneth should be in AZ's starting line-up tonight.
