COVENTRY v BORO BIG MATCH FACTS

Middlesbrough have the honour of playing the very first FA Cup tie at the brand new Ricoh Stadium. Coventry made the fourth round after beating Brighton 1-0 away on the same day that Boro were held by Nuneaton.

Micky Adams' side are nineteen league places below Boro. They've won six of the last ten and three of the last four, including a 6-1 hammering of Derby last weekend.

The Sky Blues are currently enjoying a seven-match unbeaten spell in all competitions at home, while visiting Middlesbrough have gone seven away without victory.

Coventry have exited from the Cup at this fourth round stage in four of the last five years, and in each of the last three. They have not beaten opposition from a higher division in the FA Cup since defeating Charlton in a home third round tie on 16th January 1937 in a 2-0 victory.

The Sky Blues have gone one better than Middlesbrough in the FA Cup because they actually won it in 1987 beating Tottenham 3-2 in the 1987 final. It was the duo John Sillett and George Curtis' managerial highlight and the match was decided six minutes into extra time when Lloyd McGrath scored to bring Coventry back from behind.

Boro's 5-2 triumph in the replay with Nuneaton Borough is our only victory in nine league and cup matches since the mid-December win against Fulham. In that time, we have conceded twelve goals in three games.

Boro have not been knocked out of the cup by lower league opposition since Wrexham beat us 2-1 at the Racecourse Ground in the third round on 11th December 1999.

Boro and Coventry have met only once before in the FA Cup on 7th January 1978. A brace from David Mills and one from Tony McAndrew saw Boro though to the fourth round and we went on to reach the quarter finals that year where the biggest cup shock of that year took place whne we were beaten by Leyton Orient.

Boro and Coventry have met a total of thiry-seven times with Boro winning twelve and Coventry fourteen. All but one of those matches were in the league.

Middlesbrough have been knocked out in the fourth round in each of the last two seasons.
