Former Boro target Andy van der Meyde could get his first run-out for Everton after recovering from a groin injury.
Tim Cahill and Duncan Ferguson are doubtful with ankle and back injuries respectively and defender Nuno Valente definitely misses the game after picking up a hamstring injury in Sunday's draw with Chelsea.
Boro's Stuart Parnaby has surprisingly recovered from a groin injury and Ugo Ehiogu also returns after proving his fitness in a reserve team game.
Ugo will replace Gareth Southgate who is out for six weeks with a groin strain.
It is unknown what line-up or formation Steve McClaren will play.
Everton boss David Moyes said that the Toffee's draw against Chelsea has given everyone at the club a big lift and given Everton the feeling of 'that's more like it'.
Steve McClaren admits that Boro have not yet achieved the consistency we want but pointed out that his side have lost only two games in the last eight.
"The game at Everton gives us another chance to get it right" he added.
