MIDDLESBROUGH v NEWCASTLE - THE NEUTRAL PREVIEW
By Jonathan Turner of Bettingzone.co.uk
Anyone who witnessed Newcastle's display against Spurs last weekend will concur that they look a decent bet at 15/8 to take the spoils in their Tyne-Tees derby with Middlesbrough at the Riverside.
The Magpies produced arguably their best display of a frustrating season to humble Martin Jol's Champions League hopefuls, and I can well see them getting a result in this one.
Middlesbrough of course were involved in a gruelling UEFA Cup clash with FC Basle on Thursday night, and their efforts to come back from 3-0 down on aggregate to progress can only be applauded.
However they have to be tired after such a Herculean effort, and having played a lot of football in recent weeks they surely won't be at their best physically for this one.
There has been very little between the teams in recent seasons, with their last three Premiership clashes ending in score draws.
Alan Shearer was among the scorers the last time they met on Teesside, and BetFred's 7/4 quote about him scoring in the match looks rather inviting.
In terms of picking a winner, Newcastle are value at 15/8 but the percentage call is to take the 3/4 about them (0, +0.5) on the Asian Handicap.
Boro must be feeling it after their UEFA Cup heroics in the week, while Newcastle will want to build on their win against Spurs.
Verdict: Middlesbrough 1 Newcastle 2
