I CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE MATCH!
Paul McKeown
I can't get to the home leg ......... or the final !!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe I did this but months ago I set up two
international meetings - one in Amsterdam for April 27th to 29th and one
in
Paris for May 9th to 11th. I am leading both and have twenty-plus people coming
in
from the US, Australia, Asia and various parts of Europe for each
event. I
think I would be missed.
I had it in my head that the Uefa Cup final was on May 12th - why didn't I
check? - and, unbelievably, signed off a Seine boat trip as the social event
for
the night of May 10th only last month. So when you are all in Eindhoven I will be on the Seine eating canaps and
being corporate-sociable. For the whole of the game.
However, as I explained to my son when I walked past the bookies in the
Riverside last Thursday and didn't put the 4-1 bet on, there is
obviously a
sequence of events here which cannot be disturbed for Boro to win the
Uefa Cup.
Last Thursday I was convinced that if I had made the bet Boro
would not
have won 4-1 and would have gone out of the cup. I am now convinced that if I
hadn't
made the arrangements above and go to either game, Boro cannot win the
Uefa Cup.
Believe it or not, in the Hairy Lemon shot of the Basel night - right here - I was holding
up four fingers and my son was holding up one to show the 4-1 prediction. But Harry took the
shot as
our hands were coming down.
I have got to say that I now have unlimited 'Dad points' with my son.
He was
taken aback that I was MORE interested in the Boro getting through than
winning £450 and seeing them get knocked out. He is now convinced that
to be
a true football supporter you also have to have belief in a high level
of
superstition.
It is all Jungian sychronicity. For the semi and final it is necessary
for
me not to be there for it to happen. It is even necessary for the final
for
me not to be able to watch the game live for the Boro to win.
... and, anyway, I did win 150 on the Saturday by backing
Numbersixvalverde in the Grand National (thank you Harry), so it wasn't all
bad news on the gambling front ...
