MIDDLESBROUGH v SEVILLA, UEFA CUP FINAL, 10th MAY 2006
Sevilla were deserved winners of the Uefa Cup tonight, however the thin line between success and failure has never been more evident
Had Mark Viduka's piledriving shot from eight yards not been brilliantly saved by the Spanish keeper and had referee Fandel given a penalty for a blatant foul on Vids midway through the second half, the whole thing could have been so very different.
That is the thin line between winning and losing. However the Boro gave it their all tonight and had the circumstances been different, then the result could also have been. Had decisions gone Boro's way then it is unlikely that Sevilla would have won so emphatically. The scoreline flattered the Spanish and was grossly unfair on a hard working and battling Boro side.
Sevilla shaded the first half however it was nowhere near as comprehensive as the pundits would have you believe, with Boro regisitering a mere one shot less on target than their Spanish opponents. However the threat of the Sevillians was demonstrated in the opening ten minutes, with two decisive attacks down Boro's right-wing that nearly led to goals.
Middlesbrough Football Club will come back from this match immensely stronger and richer for the experience. This was a massive step for the club and although defeat in this manner is difficult to stomach, we will return in the new season a better club for the experience.
Tonight, we can hold out heads up high in defeat. Be aware that the next time we appear in a major final, it will be us who have the rub of the green.
MUCH MORE COMING VERY SOON...
