MIDDLESBROUGH v SPURS BETTING PREVIEW 17-12-05
Harry Haverton
I'm like a kiddie in a sweet shop this week because the odds on the Boro v Spurs game are not what I expected at all. There's some serious value to be had from our match programme sponsors Total Bet and here's my lowdown of the very best deals.
Middlesbrough are very good value for a straightfoward win at 6/4. Boro usually raise their game against the top sides and Spurs are definitely in that category and if you fancy them to prevail at The Riverside, you'll get 19/10 on them and 21/10 on the draw.
Let's take a look at the half-time/full-time table as this is the section of the coupon that I always find easy to edge. In fact, I've ended up in profit on the half-time/full-time table every time I have used it this season.
Middlesbrough/Middlesbrough 7/2
Middlesbrough/Draw 14/1
Middlesbrough/Tottenham 28/1
Draw/Middlesbrough 9/2
Draw/Draw 7/2
Draw/Tottenham 5/1
Tottenham/Middlesbrough 28/1
Tottenham/Draw 14/1
Tottenham/Tottenham 4/1
The method is simple. Remove the most unlikely outcomes so that you are left with only those that you consider feasible. Take the lowest odds from your selection and whittle the list down further until you have the same number of selections as the number of the lowest odds. Here's an example.
I have chopped my list up and am left with;
Middlesbrough/Draw 14/1
Draw/Middlesbrough 9/2
Middlesbrough/Middlesbrough 7/2
That's three selections and the lowest odds are 7/2, or 3.5/1 for the purpose of this exercise. If I put a tenner on each, I will win if one of my selections romps home.
Moving on, you can use exactly the same method for the correct score forecast, only this time it's even better because the lowest odds on the coupon are 7/1 allowing you seven bets on the correct score. And if you can't predict the correct score in seven attempts, then you really should be staying away from bookmakers and betting sites altogether. Here's the table.
Middlesbrough 1-0 7/1
Middlesbrough 2-0 10/1
Middlesbrough 2-1 8/1
Middlesbrough 3-0 20/1
Middlesbrough 3-1 20/1
Middlesbrough 3-2 28/1
Middlesbrough 4-0 80/1
Middlesbrough 4-1 66/1
Middlesbrough 4-2 66/1
Draw 0-0 8/1
Draw 1-1 11/2
Draw 2-2 14/1
Draw 3-3 50/1
Tottenham 1-0 7/1
Tottenham 2-0 10/1
Tottenham 2-1 9/1
Tottenham 3-0 28/1
Tottenham 3-1 22/1
Tottenham 3-2 28/1
Tottenham 4-0 80/1
Tottenham 4-1 80/1
Tottenham 4-2 80/1
Just for the record, I've pinched another £70 from the Mrs' purse and I've whacked it on Boro 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, Spurs the same and a 1-1 draw. Unless it's 0-0 or 2-2 or one team scores three, then I'll be clocking onto Total Bet on Sunday afternoon to make a withdrawal.
Even if worst case happens and the 1-0 comes in at 7/1, I still make a tenner and you also get £25 in free bets from Total Bet as well, if you are a new registrant with them.
You'll be aware that most coupons contain first goalscorer odds. The best thing about the Total Bet coupon is that it contains a 'score at any time' section and I'm going to play with this in the final part of the article.
Using the same methodology as before, you can do alright on this coupon, for example I fancy Fabio Rochemback to pop his cherry against Tottenham and I'll back him at 5/1. That gives me four other selections at 5/1 or higher to create a situation where I am reasonably well covered and have a good chance of winning.
Here's the complete table for the match.
Grzegorz Rasiak 9/7
Mark Viduka 13/8
Jermain Defoe 7/4
Robbie Keane 7/4
Hossam Mido 15/8
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 15/8
Massimo Maccarone 5/2
Szilard Nemeth 5/2
Andy Reid 4/1
James Morrison 4/1
Wayne Routledge 4/1
Fabio Rochemback 5/1
Jermaine Jenas 5/1
Aaron Lennon 6/1
Michael Brown 6/1
Teemu Tainio 6/1
Edgar Davids 7/1
Franck Queudrue 8/1
George Boateng 8/1
Michael Carrick 9/1
Ray Parlour 9/1
Ledley King 10/1
Doriva 12/1
Michael Dawson 12/1
Paul Stalteri 12/1
Emanuel Pogatetz 14/1
Gareth Southgate 14/1
Lee Young-Pyo 14/1
Stephen Kelly 14/1
Stuart Parnaby 14/1
Ugo Ehiogu 14/1
Matthew Bates 16/1
Finally, if you think that my selections are slightly biased towards Middlesbrough, then you'd probably be right. I'm a Boro fan and I write for a Boro site. But I'm not the only one who is leaning towards the home side because in the goalscorers table above, Total Bet haven't even included Yakubu, which means that they either forgot about him or don't want to take any bets on him scoring. I suspect the latter.
Hit any of the Total Bet links on this page to qualify for your £25 worth of free bets and good luck in the match, whatever you decide to do. And if you see me on match day, do us a favour and buy me a pint, as I spent last week's wages down the bookies.
