Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate welcomes back James Morrison and Abel Xavier for Saturday's crucial Barclays Premiership match against fellow strugglers Blackburn at Ewood Park.

Midfielder Morrison, who missed the Boxing Day draw with Everton due to a calf strain, will almost certainly dislodge Gaizka Mendieta from the starting line-up while defensive utility man Xavier (hamstring) is set to take a place on the bench.

Julio Arca is struggling to prove his fitness after picking up a hip injury in training, while Robert Huth (foot) will be out until the middle of January at the earliest.

Brad Friedel will continue in goal for Blackburn despite being troubled by a dead leg.

Friedel was unable to take goal-kicks during the Boxing Day win over Liverpool but Rovers boss Mark Hughes is happy to let the former USA international play on.

Hughes is likely to name an unchanged side but there is some good news on the injury front, with Francis Jeffers due to return to training on Wednesday after a recent hamstring problem.

Blackburn (from): Friedel, Brown, Neill, Todd, Ooijer, Gray, Emerton, Savage, Kerimoglu, Pedersen, Bentley, Nonda, McCarthy, Brown, Derbyshire, Mokoena, Henchoz, Peter, Khizanishvili.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Davies, Taylor, Woodgate, Pogatetz, Boateng, Cattermole, Morrison, Downing, Viduka, Yakubu, Jones, Parnaby, Xavier, Mendieta, Rochemback, Christie, Euell, Maccarone, Johnson.
