Jonathan Woodgate is expected to return to the heart of Middlesbrough's defence for this afternoon's vital Barclays Premiership clash with Charlton.

The England international missed the 2-1 defeat at Fulham on Monday night with an ankle problem, but manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed he will return to the squad this weekend.

He will be joined by Austrian Emanuel Pogatetz, who was suspended for the trip to Craven Cottage, but Abel Xavier remains a doubt with a hamstring injury and Robert Huth (foot) is a long-term absentee.

Charlton have several injury concerns ahead of their trip to the Riverside.

Darren Ambrose (knee), Dennis Rommedahl (foot), Hermann Hreidarsson (Achilles) and Radostin Kishishev (calf) all face fitness tests, while winger Jerome Thomas (virus) is another doubt.

Midfielder Andy Reid (hamstring) is unlikely to feature against Boro, while left-back and Addicks captain Luke Young (knee) will miss the whole of the Christmas period.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Jones, Parnaby, Taylor, Xavier, Woodgate, Pogatetz, Davies, Wheater, Boateng, Cattermole, Morrison, Downing, Arca, Johnson, Rochemback, Mendieta, Viduka, Yakubu, Christie.

Charlton (from): Carson, Sankofa, Fortune, Diawara, Traore, Rommedahl, Faye, Hughes, Sam, M Bent, D Bent, Myhre, Thomas, Holland, Hasselbaink, El Karkouri, Hreidarsson, Ambrose, Kishishev, Reid.
