CHELSEA v MIDDLESBROUGH - DROGBA WANTS DOUBLE WHAMMY
Chelsea's leading goalscorer Didier Drogba insists winning the Golden Boot in Europe this season would mean nothing if Chelsea fail to retain the Premiership title.
The Ivorian hitman, who has 23 goals so far this season, would prefer to win both awards to round off one of the best seasons of his career.
Drogba's 77th-minute goal in his country's 1-0 friendly win over Guinea this week was his 17th for Ivory Coast as a Chelsea player making him the club's all-time international top scorer, moving clear of the 16 scored by England legend Jimmy Greaves while at Stamford Bridge.
Now the 28-year-old wants his goals to earn him another title-winning medal and the coveted Golden Boot for being top scorer in Europe.
Drogba said: "Of course I can win the Golden Boot. But as much as I'd love to be the top scorer, it would mean nothing if Chelsea don't win the league. I'd like to win the Premiership and the Golden Boot.
"I've scored some great goals this year. If I had to pick my best, I'd say it was the one at Everton. It was a dramatic last-minute goal and a very important one because we came from behind to win."
Drogba will lead the attack against Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge although Chelsea may be furthered hampered by injuries to midfielder Mikel Jon Obi and Michael Ballack.
Chelsea will know the result of scans on Ballack's injured thigh on Friday after the German captain became their latest casualty.
The champions are already without England midfielder Joe Cole and left-back Ashley Cole and Ballack was forced out of Germany's clash with Switzerland with a thigh strain in midweek.
Obi, the subject of a row between Nigeria and Chelsea over an alleged thigh injury he sustained in the Barclays Premiership win over Charlton last weekend, is also doubtful despite playing 90 minutes in the game against Ghana this week.
Chelsea are to contact FIFA over the issue and insist the player was injured and the club are understood to be perplexed as to why Nigeria selected the midfielder knowing this.
Chelsea hope to continue their recent return to form against Middlesbrough in what will the first game of a testing 16 days for coach Jose Mourinho's men with the Blues playing a crucial game in all four of the competitions they are involved in.
In February 2005 they faced a similar 16-day test but they crashed out of the FA Cup to Newcastle, lost the first leg of their Champions League clash with Barcelona before winning the Carling Cup by beating Liverpool.
Now they have to beat Middlesbrough in the Premiership, overcome an FA Cup tie with Blackpool or Norwich, beat Mourinho's former club Porto in the Champions League and then take on Arsenal in the final of the Carling Cup before the end of the month.
