MIDDLESBROUGH v CHELSEA BETTING ZONE PREVIEW
Dave Tindall
Gareth Southgate must have thought football management was an easy game when his Boro side raced into a 2-0 lead midway through the first half of their opener at Reading on Saturday.
But he was left reeling by the Royals' fightback which sealed an amazing 3-2 victory and he now faces the daunting prospect of trying to cope with the visit of the reigning champions to the Riverside.
Chelsea for their part started in ruthlessly efficient style against Manchester City, coasting to a 3-0 success despite a slightly troubled build-up.
It's worth pointing out however that Boro excelled at home against the top flight's big guns last season, winning 3-0 against Chelsea and also beating both Arsenal and Manchester United and drawing with Liverpool.
That's a hugely impressive record by anyone's standards and is just about enough to put us off getting involved with a Blues win at no better than 1/2.
However it's impossible to make any sort of case for Boro - even at 15/2 - as they looked alarmingly fragile at the back on Saturday.
Part of the reason for that was a shaky debut from Julio Arca, their only signing of the summer, but that's since been explained by the fact he broke a bone in his foot in the first half and is out for three weeks.
That's an injury they could do without right now as Southgate steps up his search for players and this looks a game to leave well alone.
Verdict: Middlesbrough 0 Chelsea 2
