HULL CITY v MIDDLESBROUGH - MASSIMO REJECTS LEEDS MOVE
Massimo Maccarone has rejected a loan move to dying Yorkshire outfit Leeds United.
Boro's UEFA Cup goal hero and ComeOnBoro Man of the Year 2006 was recently quoted speaking about his frustration with his current position at the club and is currently back in Italy nursing a slight thigh problem.
Manager Gareth Southgate was also quoted: "Massimo hasn't had as much football as he would have liked. Whilst you hope that if there was anything to say it would be said in the training ground, you can understand his frustrations.
"At least it shows me he wants to play football. I have to pick a team and do what I think is right for the team and unfortunately Massimo hasn't figured as much as he would have liked.
"He has a slight injury at the moment, he has to be fit and ready to be involved when he gets back but I understand if he feels he has to move on to get the football that he wants.
"If he can do that we will help him on his way as well.
"I don't close the door on anybody. All the time they are contracted to our club they have a part to play. I would be foolish for me to say any of our players don't have a future here.
"It looks as though people may move on but things change overnight in football.
As the Leeds offer went all the way to the player, clearly Boro had accepted an offer from the doomed Elland Road side.
Maccarone himself has reiterated his wish to leave Middlesbrough and return to Italy.
The striker admits he has not been at his best this season but is still frustrated at his lack of opportunities.
With Boro just above the Barclays Premiership relegation zone, the ex-Empoli forward told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I want to change and maybe come back to Italy.
"I'm not perfect and, for sure, I haven't had my best performance - but I've never complained and I've always trained seriously.
"When I've played I gave my best always."
Maccarone is hoping to join Torino, Siena or Napoli.
"There are negotiations but up until now, nothing concrete," he said.
"I don't ask the guarantee to be a regular but I want to play for a place at the same level as the others."
