ENGLAND v MACEDONIA - SLUGGISH ENGLAND FAIL TO IMPRESS

England suffered humiliation at the hands of Macedonia for the second time in four years as they were held to a goalless draw in their Euro 2008 qualifier at Old Trafford.

Steve McClaren's side were woeful in the opening 45 minutes and there was only a slight upturn in fortunes after the break against a well-organised side who had drawn with England at St Mary's Stadium in 2002.

Macedonia grew in confidence as the game progressed and there will have to be a massive improvement if England are to secure a positive result in Croatia on Wednesday.

They remain top of Group E thanks to Israel's draw in Russia but now face a big test away in Zagreb particularly as Steven Gerrard will be suspended and Rio Ferdinand must also be a serious doubt because of a back injury.

Wayne Rooney performed a couple of early tricks to please the crowd but his impact was negligible.

It was his first England appearance since his red card in the World Cup quarter-final and McClaren had claimed he was ready to "explode'' but he simmered for 75 minutes without making much of an impression and was replaced by Jermain Defoe.
