England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence has insisted Steve McClaren and Terry Venables are "working very well together" amid claims they were at odds over why Stewart Downing was axed against Croatia.

McClaren had an exchange with the media at a press conference ahead of Wednesday night's friendly against Holland in Amsterdam.

But former Liverpool and England goalkeeper Clemence told BBC Radio Five Live there was "no suggestion whatsoever" of a rift between the pair.

He said: "They are working very well together. It is always interesting to see how they exchange ideas."

He added that he was surprised to see "criticism coming so soon" especially as McClaren is only five games into his regime as England boss.

"I know it will come if we don't win but it isn't as though we haven't qualified," said Clemence.
