The Republic of Ireland travel to San Marino on Wednesday expecting to get the three points they need to thrust themselves back into the race to reach Euro 2008.

After a nightmare start to their campaign, when they suffered two defeats in their first three games including a 5-2 mauling at the hands of Cyprus, it looked like Steve Staunton's side were effectively down and out.

But they thrashed San Marino last time out at Lansdowne Road, which Sporting Preview correctly predicting it would finish 5-0, and another convinving win would at least make the table look better, even though anything less would be a failure.

The Irish are understandably a best price of 1/25 and 1/9 about the double result, so we're going to punt on a correct scoreline.

San Marino have lost 13-0, 7-0 and 5-0 in their first three games so it's clear their results are 'improving' but we can't see it getting much better for them here on in.

We're confident about backing a Robbie Keane-inspired Ireland running out 5-0 winners again which is 8/1 with Betfred but having a safety net is also a wise option.

Staunton has called up seven uncapped, young players in his squad and although he'll start with his strongest line-up possible, there's every chance they'll take their foot off the gas when the game is 'won' and give some of these youngsters a taste of international football.

With that in mind 4-0 is also worth having in the pocket and 6/1 with Betfred is decent value.

Another bet worth serious consideration is for Shane Long to grab a debut goal anytime at 5/4 with BetDirect.

The Reading striker, who has been overshadowed by injured team-mate Kevin Doyle since their arrivals from Cork City in 2005, will get his chance up front and will surely have plenty of chances put on his plate.

With three goals from five games at club level in 2007, we're confident the 19-year-old will continue this form against the European minnows.
