ISRAEL v ENGLAND - TERRY: ONLY A WIN WILL DO
England will go all out for victory in Israel tomorrow as they look to make amends for the "heartbreaking" defeat in Croatia, according to captain John Terry.
Terry believes a draw will not be good enough for Steve McClaren's side as they look to improve their Euro 2008 qualifying fortunes following a draw at home to Macedonia and defeat in Zagreb last autumn.
Ahead of the match in Tel Aviv tomorrow, Terry told a press conference televised by Sky Sports News: "Certainly coming into it there's a lot on this game, everyone knows we need to win this game and nothing else.
"As a group of players we are wanting to improve on the last performances and get up the table to where we belong.
"We all know we didn't play well. This is about a group of players taking it on our shoulders to make something happen.
"We didn't play well as a team or individuals and we realise we need to make something happen now and do something about it."
Terry added: "To watch over (the Croatia defeat) again has been heartbreaking, to be honest. We owe the fans, ourselves and the manager.
"I don't like to see us where we are at the moment.
"We can't come here and say a draw is a good result. At the moment a draw will not be good enough for us."
Chelsea skipper Terry described as "rubbish" suggestions predecessor David Beckham's captaincy provoked jealousy in the ranks.
"That's rubbish, basically. When Becks was captain things were fantastic in the squad, he got everyone together and everyone loved him being captain and I'd like to think it's pretty much the same with me now.
"Our preparation and fitness has always been good, we know it's about us underachieving as a group or players since Steve McClaren took over."
Terry admitted it is crucial for England to match Israel in terms of effort.
"Wherever we go in the world teams up it 20 or 30% and we need to make sure we match that ability and heart.
"If we've not matching them in terms of fighting spirit then we've got no chance."
The England captain is aware of the threat Chelsea team-mate Ben Sahar could pose.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has already stated that the striker will make the step-up from reserve to first team next season.
And Terry explained: "At this level age doesn't matter, we've seen that with Wayne Rooney.
"Ben is a good player, quick and he scores goals.
"If he plays I'd like to think I'd know a bit about how he plays."
Terry is pleased to have Owen Hargreaves back in the frame, adding: "Jamie Carragher and Scott Parker have done great when they've been called upon - but for the last year he has been great for us and hopefully we'll see the same Owen."
However, he is aware of the threat Israel pose, adding: "We understand Israel is a tough place to come and play football.
"They have some very good players in their team, they are a very good side, very professional. But we must win.
"We are very serious and focused and aware what threats there are to England - and one thing coming out of everyone's mouths are we need a win and three points."
