ITALY v SCOTLAND - DONADONI SALUTES SCOTTISH ACHIEVEMENT
Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has warned his players not to underestimate in-form Scotland in their Euro 2008 qualifier.
The world champions go into their first international fixture of the year trailing five points behind the Scots, who lead Group B alongside France.
"I think the standing speaks for itself," said Donadoni. "I'm not surprised that Scotland are in the top position in the group, they deserve to be there and I guess, looking at the standings, we deserve to be where we are."
Donadoni has reason to be wary ahead of the clash at the San Nicola stadium, having watched Alex McLeish's side take a late 2-1 triumph against Georgia at the weekend.
"They battled for a win and they got the result in the last minute," he said. "They showed a lot of character and it's no surprise that they currently have 12 points in the standings.
"The fact that they are five points clear of us says a lot about them.
"Then again, we knew our group was going to be very balanced and that has been the case so far."
Donadoni will be hoping the experience and quality of his players will overcome the Scots' fighting spirit.
"We know we will face challenges against Scotland," he said. "But we will try to make life difficult for them too."
In view of the importance of this game for Italy's hopes of getting back on track in qualifying, Donadoni has demanded his players remain patient and control the game.
"We must use our heads," he said. "We will make a big mistake to be in a hurry to try to score in the first 10 minutes.
"This would only be a counter-productive for us. We must remember that a game lasts 90 minutes.
"Of course, our aim is to win this game but this is not the game of our lives and we must remain calm.
"What we have to do is impose the rhythm from the start."
