Kenny Miller is well aware he has come under fire for his lack of goals for both club and country this season.

But the striker insists he would sacrifice any future goals for Scotland in their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign if it meant booking their place at their first major finals in a decade.

The Celtic hitman is expected to he handed the lone forward's role in Wednesday night's crucial qualifier against Italy in Bari's San Nicola Stadium.

But Miller - who has netted 10 goals in all competitions this season - insists he has nothing to prove.

He said: "The people that matter are the management and my team-mates. If I score it's great.

"It's not about me scoring. I wouldn't mind not scoring throughout the whole campaign if we were to get there, as long as I'm contributing.

"For me, I feel I am and obviously the management and team-mates feel that way, too. They obviously do because they always say they appreciate me.

"I know as a forward you are there to score goals and, ultimately, you're going to be judged on that, but it's not just about me scoring goals.

"It's about us getting to the Euros and, if we do that, it would be a massive achievement for the team."

However, Miller does admit that he is disappointed his first season at Celtic has not been more productive in terms of his goal haul.

He added: "I'm as disappointed as the next guy that I don't have 16, 17 or 18 goals under my belt, but I'm my biggest critic.

"I know I should have more goals, but I don't feel as if I've been playing badly.

"I'm still working hard, trying to do the right things, training hard. It's not as if I'm letting off in any way.

"The goals have just not come this year. I know I didn't score on Saturday, but I'm still playing quite regularly at international level which is quite pleasing.

"But for Celtic, the goals just aren't coming as well as I'd hoped.

"I'm working hard. I don't feel as if I've had a bad season playing-wise. I just feel as if I've had a bad season in terms of my goal return.

"So I'm up there to be shot at. When you're playing at a club like Celtic and, in some people's eyes, not doing your job by not scoring goals every week, you're going to get stick.

"That's fair enough and I can take it. It gets to you a bit because you still feel you're doing your job, still contributing to the team, so it does affect you at some points, but the manager and your team-mates still appreciate you and that's the thing that matters."

Miller and Rangers striker Kris Boyd formed a two-pronged attack against Georgia at Hampden Park on Saturday, a game which Scotland won 2-1.

But he insists he has absolutely no qualms about being isolated up front against the Italians tonight, in a role he has performed with some success in the past.

He said: "If that's the way the manager wants to go, I'd love it. I love playing for Scotland. I look at it as a challenge.

"We'll be taking on the best team in the world, with some of the best defenders in the world, and for me that's a challenge.

"If I'm up there on my own, it's me against them and hopefully I can play my part in the team getting any kind of result."
