Alex Ferguson has received good news on the defensive front ahead of Manchester United's Old Trafford clash with Middlesbrough.

Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea and Patrice Evra are all fit after minor knocks, with at least two of the returning men expected to win starting berths.

Park Ji-Sung (knee) is still out, along with Louis Saha (hamstring) and Nemanja Vidic (collar bone), although the Serbian is expected to return to training on Monday.

Middlesbrough's inspirational midfielder Julio Arca has been ruled out of Saturday's clash.

The Argentinian, who has been struggling with a groin tear, has returned to training but Boro boss Gareth Southgate is not prepared to risk him at Old Trafford.

Abel Xavier (back) is rated doubtful though Robert Huth is available for selection and key striker Mark Viduka has now fully recovered from a stomach upset.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Brown, Heinze, Evra, Fletcher, Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Richardson, Rooney, Smith, Solskjaer, Cathcart.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Davies, Taylor, Woodgate, Pogatetz, Boateng, Rochemback, Cattermole, Downing, Viduka, Yakubu, Morrison, Jones, Parnaby, Riggott, Huth, Lee, Johnson, Christie.
