Injury-prone Malcolm Christie is battling to overcome a groin strain picked up in training this week ahead of Saturday's clash with leaders Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium.

Christie, plagued by injury over the past three years, scored his first Premiership goal in 21 months against Aston Villa last weekend.

Mark Viduka, recovering from a broken toe, has an outside chance of making the substitutes' bench but Tony McMahon (broken leg), Chris Riggott (knee), Andrew Davies (calf) and Matthew Bates (knee) are sidelined.

Rio Ferdinand has recovered from the minor ankle knock he picked up on Wednesday and will be fit for the clash.

The England international had been a doubt but should take his place in a much-changed line-up as the Red Devils look to open a six-point lead at the Premiership summit.

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Louis Saha are all expected to return, as should Nemanja Vidic despite still feeling the after-effects of a crack on the jaw from Didier Drogba's elbow last week.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Xavier, Taylor, Woodgate, Huth, Pogatetz, Boateng, Cattermole, Morrison, Downing, Euell, Yakubu, Arca, Jones, Parnaby, Rochemback, Mendieta, Parlour, Viduka, Maccarone, Johnson.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Silvestre, Heinze, Evra, Ronaldo, Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher, O'Shea, Giggs, Richardson, Rooney, Saha, Smith.
