MIDDLESBROUGH v PORTSMOUTH BETTING ZONE PREVIEW
Dave Tindall

Pompey have suffered thirty-seven away defeats in their three seasons in the Premiership.

But none of those have come at Middlesbrough.

All three meetings between this pair at the Riverside have ended in draws - two 1-1's and a 0-0.

Portsmouth have twice led so there are warning signs for Boro.

Perhaps the biggest danger to Gareth Southgate's team though is that they'll suffer a reaction to their thrilling 2-1 win over champions Chelsea.

It's such a common occurence for teams of Boro's level to mix intoxicating highs with desperately disappointing lows although the evidence from last year is promising if not ultimately conclusive.

Boro beat Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea at the Riverside last season and won their next game on all three occasions.

However, all those matches were in the UEFA Cup and Boro would expect to be beating the likes of Xanthi and Dnipro.

Boro will certainly attract money at 6/5 on the basis of their Chelsea win but that price is certainly paying respect to Portsmouth's improvements under Harry Redknapp.

Portsmouth have beaten Blackburn 3-0 at Fratton Park and drawn 0-0 at Manchester City in their two games so far and won three of their last four Premiership away games at the back end of last season.

Pompey are 11/4 to make the long journey south with all three points but given recent history and the fact that both sides have started well this season the draw appeals most at 5/2 with Skybet.

In the goalscorer markets, Yakubu scored against his old club in this fixture last year while in Pompey colours he blasted four against Boro in a 5-1 win in 2004. However, he hasn't scored at the Riverside in his last eight starts.

On the Portsmouth side, Gary O'Neil scored in both games against Middlesbrough last year, including the winner at Fratton Park.

O'Neil is 9/2 to net anytime and 18's to score first.
