MIDDLESBROUGH v PORTSMOUTH TEAM NEWS
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will have to do without injured midfielder Pedro Mendes for the trip to face Middlesbrough tonight.
And Pompey have suffered another injury blow with on-loan defender Glen Johnson damaging an ankle in training.
Right-back Johnson, who joined Pompey from champions Chelsea for the season, was in top form in their first two matches but was ruled out of the trip to Middlesbrough, with the club admitting "we don't know yet how long he is likely to be missing".
Mendes is out after the horrendous challenge by Ben Thatcher which has seen the Manchester City defender suspended by his club, charged by the Football Association and the subject of a police investigation.
Redknapp has brought in David James, Sol Campbell, Kanu and Glen Johnson this summer but missed out on striker Obafemi Martins who signed for Newcastle.
Injuries to striker Lomana LuaLua (ankle) and Mendes have left his resources stretched, and youth team goalkeeper Nick Jordan again looks likely to be on the bench as Dean Kiely (thigh) and Jamie Ashdown (broken thumb) recover from pre-season setbacks.
Teenage defender Matthew Bates could return to the Middlesbrough squad.
The 19-year-old local-born player, who was a regular in the side in pre-season, has not played in either of Boro's two opening league games because of a knee injury.
Manager Gareth Southgate will definitely be without new signing Julio Arca, who will be sidelined for at least another two weeks after breaking a bone in his foot at Reading on the opening day. Ugo Ehiogu is the third defender currently having treatment, having suffered an Achilles injury during the summer.
