JEFF WINTER ON THE SEASON AHEAD FOR BORO 18-8-06

This weekend, Jeff Winter starts his second season as TFM's phone-in presenter. Due to popular demand, the show has now been extended to ninety minutes. Always a controversial referee, Jeff has carried this style into his show and you may find yourself receiving a yellow or red card or even cut off in your prime during the phone-in.
Jeff is a lifelong Middlesbrough fan but all three local sides are covered on the show so Darlington and Hartlepool fans have equal opportunity to express their views and have their say.
On the forthcoming season Jeff, the eternal optimist had predicted a sixty-point tally in the Evening Gazette's prediction league with fifteen wins and fifteen draws for Gareth Southgate's side but in conversation with ComeOnBoro, he has now re-assessed that.
"I must be fucking mad", said Jeff. "But like all Boro fans, my heart often rules my head."
"But seriously, this season could go either way. Steve McClaren started with four straight defeats and the same could happen to Gareth Southgate."
"Much has been said about Boro's brilliant academy and this season is the time to see if the youngsters can cut the mustard."
"Thinking back to the famous Alan Hansen statement, 'you can't win anything with kids', Manchester United won the title with kids by the ages of 21, the Nevilles, Butt, Giggs, Beckham and Scholes were establised internationals and had pockets full of medals. If Boro's current crop are good enough this season, they should establish themselves and save Boro a fortune."
"The sight of Lee Cattermole crying with despair in defeat sure beats the sight of Boksic and co. fucking off back to their homelands with pockets full of our hard earned."
In Friday's Gazette in his regular column, Jeff had a pop at the fans who have decided not to renew thier season tickets. The fans who in the past have blamed Steve McClaren's tactics, television saturation and too many games as excuses for not attending regularly. Jeff says that the fans do not have these argumenst this season.
"Yes, it's costly to watch football and even more costly to compete as a team but wiht possibly ten thousand empty seats at each game, the loss of revenue will make competing with Chelski and co even less likely."
Jeff is starting his TFM show off with 'Winter's Whinge of the Week' and this week his rant will be at the Boro fans who have voted with their feet.
If you disagree with this, then Saturday nights between 5:30pm and 7:00pm is the time to have your say.The show will also be featuring popular opinion from the New Holgate Message Board and comment from the ComeOnBoro.com writers.
