Middlesbrough defender Abel Xavier is included in the squad for the first time since completing his year-long cough medicine ban for Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash with West Ham.

The 33-year-old former Portuguese international, who signed a short-term contract earlier this week, is in contention with Gareth Southgate's defensive resources stretched by injury.

Chris Riggott (ankle ligaments) has returned to training, but is still short of match fitness, while Ugo Ehiogu (Achilles) and Stuart Parnaby (foot) are still out, and striker Mark Viduka is nursing two fractured toes.

West Ham have doubts over centre-back Anton Ferdinand (Achilles) and striker Bobby Zamora (ankle) ahead of the clash.

George McCartney could be asked to fill in after coming off the bench during the win over Arsenal, but Wales international James Collins is also pressing for a start.

Striker Dean Ashton remains a long-term absentee as he continues recovery from a broken ankle.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Turnbull, Xavier, Bates, Davies, Huth, Woodgate, Pogatetz, Taylor, Arca, Boateng, Downing, Cattermole, Morrison, Rochemback, Euell, Yakubu, Maccarone, Graham.

West Ham (from): Green, Spector, Ferdinand, McCartney, Collins, Gabbidon, Konchesky, Benayoun, Bowyer, Mullins, Reo-Coker, Etherington, Zamora, Harewood, Sheringham, Tevez, Mascherano, Carroll.
