BRAZIL v CROATIA - MATCH REPORT
Toby Higgins

AC Milan midfielder Kaka scored the only goal of the match for Brazil as they were made to work hard for their three points against a disciplined Croatian side.

Kaka's goal, a left footed curler from twenty-five yards, came a minute before half time, with the first half dominated by the reigning champions. However, other than their goal and an effort from Ronaldinho that was tipped around the post, they had little to show for their dominance.

But the European side responded after the break, with Ivan Klasnick shooting straight at keeper Dida, as did Mario Babic late on, but they were to prove their best chances of equalising as they struggled to create.

Brazil offered little in attack as the game wore on, the uninterested Ronaldo being replaced with twenty minutes remaining, but even then, his replacement Robinho failed to make an impact with strike partner Adriano, who also struggled.

Brazil, who were disappointing on the night by their own high standards, will be relieved that, like England, Holland, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, Italy and the Czech Republic, they have won their opening game. The favourites for this year's competition will be expecting to win their two remaining games and top the group.

Croatia matched Brazil for long periods of the game and weren't afraid to attack their South American opponents, and will feel confident, despite currently lying three points behind Australia, of qualifying from Group F.
