CHEAT OF THE WEEK 7-3-07
James Bassett

It's good to know that our 'ahem' hard work hasn't gone unnoticed. We started this column up six months ago to help bring attention to the connivers, the frauds and the cheats who consistently get away relatively unpunished for continually bringing the game we love into disrepute.

Until the Valencia and Inter Milan brawl last night - which, have no fear, we'll get to next week - this was a pretty slow week in the world of the law-breakers.

Still, though, there was one man who managed to make a fool of himself above all others last week. So much so, that we've decided to open a Cheat of the Week Hall of Shame in his honour.

Our first inductee..... Stand up, Mr Arsene Wenger.

Should you need any reminding, Wenger spent the week saying things like this:

"I personally don't agree with the compliance committee and they have a very selective view. And I don't agree with the report of the linesman at all on Adebayor because for me he lies.

"I feel that Adebayor didn't punch anyone. So when the linesman says he punched someone, he lies. And when he [the linesman] says he punched Lampard, I would like you to ask Lampard if he has been punched by Adebayor. I want Lampard to say the truth and if it is yes, then we accept it.

"But we have viewed the incident under a microscope and if you can see Lampard punching Adebayor, then I would like you to show me that.

"I do not want Lampard to do anything. I just want him to say if Adebayor punched him or hit him. I just want him to say the truth.

"If they acknowledge that he got the wrong red card they would say he was right not to leave the pitch because he was wrongly dismissed."

"It's strange, just a coincidence to look at who has been charged," he added. "It's really, really difficult to accept. You conclude what you want.

"It's just a coincidence that when you have twenty men have a brawl and only the Arsenal players were guilty. It's unbelievable.

"But maybe they (the FA) have have their own way to do justice."

Over to our panel....

Dave Easson

"Perhaps it is because Arsène Wenger sees himself as passing down judgments from a moral Everest that his admirable brain sometimes seems to be starved of oxygen" - Hugh McIlvanney in The Sunday Times putting it exactly right.

Wenger seems to believe that he is the guardian of good football in this country, and everyone else is either trying to catch up or they're Bolton and stuck in the dark ages. True, his side plays some wonderful football. Sometimes it's eye-wateringly breathtaking stuff, but sometimes these fantastic players turn into clumsy oafs, sometimes childish idiots, and sometimes they're just plain French.

Wenger's side seems to mirror him as a man: intelligent, gifted, sharp and deep down smelling quite clearly of Brie.

The FA should be close to locking him up for what he's said. I don't think anyone would really disagree that he's brought the game into disrepute. Apart from David Dein perhaps. And that's where it all gets a bit blurry behind the scenes doesn't it? Should I stop here now? Are the lawyers reading?

Jeff Winter

Wenger is an absolute disgrace. He, unlike his side, is quickly catching Mourinhio up as the country's most obnoxious manager. He has no sportsmanship and is the main reason why his side are so undisciplined.

His latest outburst - calling an official a liar - should be used to hammer him. If he does not like it, then he can fuck off back to France and take his players with him. Then a British manager might get a chance and so might some young British players.

OK, we might lose out seeing world class superstars each week, but in the long term the game in this country will benefit.

Graham Frankland

Surprisingly I have to confess to quite liking Monsieur Wenger (not in a sexual way you understand?) but my admiration comes from the style of football and the quality of player he has introduced to our Premier League.

The likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Kolo Toure have been up there with the best players we have seen in their respective positions since the launch of the PL in 1992. Add to that the seemingly endless conveyor belt of young talent coming through the Arsenal ranks and it clearly shows that he is a genius in terms of "spotting" talent that he can nurture and introduce to the hurly burly of English football at the right time in their careers.

I fully understand the argument that he is not necessarily doing the English game a service by the lack of home grown players in his squad but at the end of the day that is not his concern. Winning football matches for Arsenal is and he has done that and is still doing that in a style that most football fans would agree is very pleasing on the eye and for that I applaud him.

Having said all that he does seem to operate with a huge chip on his shoulder with regards to anything that is negative towards his club or his players and he appears to counter this negativity by adopting a siege mentality from within in order to protect everything Arsenal. Sadly he does go a little over the top with this type of protection and resorts to saying things or doing things that quite simply show him in a bad light.

His wrestling match with Pardew was one such situation that made him look a little silly and his comments post Carling Cup Final about the lying official has the same effect. I am sure he would argue that this behaviour shows his competitive nature but in reality you can be competitive and respected for being so without resorting to this yobbish type of behaviour.

When all is said and done, Arsenal's own fans would dread to see him walk away from their club and that is testimony to the talent and success that he has brought their way. Now if he could only do it in a less confrontational way he would certainly have to be up there with the best managers to have graced our great national sport.

James Bassett

Part of me admires the fact that in an increasingly sanitized game, Arsene Wenger is prepared to speak his mind and let his temper get the better of him. Unfortunately, though, football's single biggest problem - and God knows it's got a lot of them - is the lack of respect meted out to the game's officials.

We cannot and should not tolerate managers or players accusing match officials of lying. It's clear that the likes of Wenger aren't swayed by a meaningless fine, and a touchline ban is ultimately ineffective, so the FA - at a time when respect for officials is at an all-time low - need to brandish much stiffer punishments.

Would Wenger have made such comments if questioning the integrity of the game's officials meant a 12-month transfer embargo? Or perhaps that he could only sign British players for the next year...

And there you have it, the first inductee to the Cheat of the Week Hall of Shame is Arsenal's perpetually whinging manager, Arsene Wenger.

If Fulham win you collect £112.20. That's £87.20 from Extrabet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair.

5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Portsmouth v Fulham match is Fulham win and you make £41.20 profit. However, if it is a draw you make £43.13 and if Portsmouth win you make £44.00. That's a minimum profit of 58%, a much better rate of interest that you would get at any high street bank or building society.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
