CHEAT OF THE WEEK 3-10-07
Peter Owen
Cheat of the Week is back again with a brand new host, Mr Peter Owen. Here's Peter's nominations for this week's prestigious award.
Didier Drogba, Chelsea
Not only did he try to con the ref into awarding him a gimmick penalty, his abusive protests against it's refusal gobbed him a well injected yellow card.
However, frustration always outplays his talents. That became clearly evident when his temper boiled over and he tried to steam his authority on a game his head had lost.
Thankfully, it was a blessing to see that Chris Baird's head was still attached to his person, when the ref showed Drogba his true colours without hesitation.
His behaviour had a far wider impact though, because he cheated on his team mates by leaving them a man light, but the paying fans paid the ultimate price.
All in all, it was a cry towards Jose.
Niko Kranjcar, Portsmouth
Kranjcar cheated Portsmouth a penalty, because he was tripped over by fresh-air as his mind entered the box.
He saw what was on offer as he approached the minefield and went for broke. The refs are under enormous amounts of pressure, because their decisions are gathered under the blink of an eye, which is why such penalties prevail.
And so to the panel...
Jeff Winter
Sorry boys, whilst Kranjcar did do a Saha, it was still a foul. Little or no dispute from defenders is usually a strong clue.
As for Drogba, well he is Drogba. Even post Mourinho he is still up to his tricks. Good to see the ref send off a Chelsea player at home. That proves a point to some of you. Two players sent off in two weeks and it should have been three.
The Special One would have exploded and I would have got a lot of media work. Bring back Jose!!
Dave Easson
Now I only saw bits of Match of the Day on Saturday night. I was already nicely bevvied (indeed
paralytic) on my 343rd leaving do.
But it was so nice to see Didier Drogba again. Remember, this poor lad's been through turmoil. He was in tears when Jose got the bullet, and I suppose he just had to take his frustrations out on someone.
What's happening to referees at the moment? First up they report Chelsea for crowding, now they send off Drogba for, well, being Didier Drogba. It's very refreshing isn't it? Horrible get...
James Bassett
Poor Chelsea. They're playing absolute garbage football at the moment and despite having spent a squillion pounds on attacking players, they've only got one striker who can actually hit the net.
Given that Fulham aren't exactly setting the world alight, the Blues would have fancied a win at home, especially with Drogba back in the team.
But, no, instead of leading from the front and driving the team to victory he gets booked for dissent and then sent-off for trying to kick Chris Baird's head onto the Kings Road. He now faces a suspension which will see new Chelsea manager, Baron Greenback, try and get a goal out of Andriy Shevchenko.
Great stuff.
And so this week's Cheat of the Week is Didier Drogba of Chelsea. Has he won the award before? Must have done...
Drogba has done himself no favours whatsoever and I believe he is now preparing himself for the January sales.
If diving is to be stamped out then it must be shown the yellow card for starters. Referee's therefore, need to at least consult with their nearest assistant, before pointing to the penalty spot so rashly.
Perhaps that road of delay may give a few pause for thought, because they would then come under the cameras lingering spotlight, regardless of the forthcoming opinion.
The speed of the game is now almost beyond the human eye and therein lies a lot of the problems, because no referee is blessed with the powers of super vision.
