VILLAIN OF THE WEEK 2-4-08
Peter Owen

Middlesbrough FC

Welcome to Villain of the Week - the most upfront feature the face of football has ever eyed. It promotes honesty and relegates villains - and has no match.

Let's move straight on to this week's nominations...

Diaby – Arsenal

You set foot to cripple Steinsson.

Matejovsky – Reading

Your stamp was nasty but the ref had you well sussed.

Queudrue – Birmingham City

Soft as it was Frank, at least you were honest to the letter.

Carsley - Everton

Your tackle on Torres signified your selective hallmark.

Yakubu – Everton

He fell over? Do not try it on with referee Howard Webb because his eyes are like crystal balls.

And so over to the panel...

Simon Dixon

My vote goes to Diaby for his terrible challenge.

There was no attempt to play the ball at all and it was only by sheer luck that Steinsson was able to get his supporting leg out of the way in time to avoid the full impact of the challenge. Had he not, it could have been another Eduardo-type injury.

I don't know what motivates idiots like Diaby to carry on like this. Obviously bad and late tackles are going to happen from time-to-time but this was really a different kettle of fish altogether.

It would be nice to see the FA make an example of him and give the lad a ten match ban. This may make him think about his conduct.

More likely though, he'll get a punishment which is less than that given to Aliadiere for his 'slap'.

Sorry guys but I don't agree with any of the selections this week. This is because the biggest villain last weekend was referee Rob Styles.

He has courted controversy his whole career but his decision to award Birmingham City a penalty for a shoulder to shoulder confrontation was at best laughable.

He was very close to bringing the game into disrepute and he should be punished for this. Will it happen? I'm not so sure. But here was a decision that was not difficult because there was no decision to make as no offence had been committed. A simple "play on" was all that was required.

I can see no justification for why he gave the decision he did and it is simply the worst decision I have ever witnessed in a Premier League game. Only he can say why he gave it but I think we will wait a long time for that to happen.

He must have been extremely embarassed when seeing it later on TV and hopefully he will learn from his mistake. I won't hold my breath on that one though.

The winner by a country mile this week is Yakubu.

The pundits say we are lost without his goals. On Sunday we saw why we are better off without him. He cost Everton the game with his giveaway for the Torres goal.

He also whined his way through ninety minutes, complaining and letting his side down. His pathetic dive was worthy of a yellow card. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Peter's analysis:

Our expert panellists have run the rule over this week’s nominations, which is very much a mixed bag of rights without pulling any punches.

I never comment on refs' mistakes – I just read about them and privately respect those who make the difficult look so very simple, like Howard Webb.

Yet at times, Rob Styles makes the simple almost laughable and has already paid the price for that this season. Yet it still won’t sink in because he gets lost in daydreams.

Ruthlessness breeds success and I would remove him to where I firmly believe he could at least try and find his feet. But the Premiership is not his purse!

Yakubu’s dive against Liverpool was pathetic. He is a two-faced swine who took a treasure chest off the Boro then had the audacity to try and ridicule the club.

He is just a greedy please-himself prat who will dive into anything that rewards and he can stick that rich ribbon of words up his backside.

Before I open up the board on Diaby of Arsenal, let’s roll back what his manager said about the tackle on Match of the Day.

Wenger said: ”It was more of a protective tackle," yet what the referee saw was an orchestrated act of pre-meditated violence which was armed to the teeth.

The only protective tackle on any football pitch is between a player's legs. This is not a cock and bull story like the one you tried to pull the curtains over!

The fair play stats produced are pure whitewash because football's cameras are being denied their purposeful opportunity to open their many eyes and cast a vote.

The figures we see are just automated numbers and are not the full shilling, like our FA.

Those who our expert panellists have chosen as their respective villains are all well worthy of winning the coveted prize of “Villain of the Week”.

However, violence in football is on the rise and Diaby stands both disgraced and without any means of defence whatsoever. He gets my deciding vote.

We offered many Arsenal fans the kindness to comment of late but not one single one took up the offer.

If you want to be a top ref, then you need to be coached by the same. That is why it is a diminishing sight and Keith Hackett has failed to see such simplicity. So look no further than his door because he is the top villain behind that fact.
