VILLAIN OF THE WEEK 30-4-08
Peter Owen

Middlesbrough FC

Welcome to Villain of the Week - the most upfront feature the face of football has ever eyed. It promotes honesty and relegates villains - and has no match.

There were no letters received this week so let's move on to this week's nominations:

Rio Ferdinand – Manchester United

When the ref's decision went against your brain, you raged in his face like a mad dog. However, to advance it beyond the final whistle tells me that a charge of bringing the game into disrepute should be 100% on!

Ballack – Chelsea

Your man-handling of Ronaldo after he replaced Rooney should have seen you carded because you left your fingerprints on everything except his balls.

Ball – Manchester City

Your tackle on Camara was a studs up attempt to recover from your own mistake and you were lucky not to see a card because it was a lunge.

Carlos Queiroz – Manchester United Assistant Puppet

You have already been charged by the FA (along with your rope man Ferguson) for opening your unruly gob and slamming the referee system.

Therefore, the further gob-full you spat out over the penalty decision awarded against your team after the Chelsea game should be your final straw.

And so over to former Premiership referee, Jeff Winter:

The players might, just might, behave better if they got some guidance from their bosses. Queiroz has again shown the true colours of his country. Portugal must be proud of producing an endless stream of petulant, bad losers.

Peter's analysis:

Respect the officials is only a front for some and we all know who the villains are!!

When Jeff Winter was the top referee in the Premiership, I could have written an A –Z of the names that would end up either being shown a card or given a verbal.

Nothing has altered since then except the influx of more foreign players. The vast majority have improved our game and are a joy to watch. However, a small minority have unpacked their own personal aggravations and showed their true colours.

It certainly does not help when they see many well established home players such as Ferdinand raging at the ref, as was seen near the end of the Chelsea game.

Once his doll's head boiled over, he showed not one morsel of respect for anything until his actions affected an innocent party and a positive brain cell sprouted up!

Mad dogs and Englishmen do not match. Add a few foreign explosions to the pot and is it any wonder that games go bang and the refs are left with the ongoing job of trying to restore discipline?

Managers are responsible for their players and the vast majority are a credit to both their position and the manner in which they always speak on camera.

Alex Ferguson is all smiles when he's winning and a cry baby when he's not. His Portuguese Puppet Queiroz has a forked tongue and sleeps in the same pram. The penalty which was awarded to Chelsea last weekend left him winded.

Unless the penalty awards are always in favour of Manchester United, they seem to think that the refs have broken the rules of the game in the Premiership.

On the balance of the season, the penalty irregularities have hit every team but it seems to me that several have been touting for sympathy decisions via the box.

They have more chance of waking up with three testicles on either side.

Queiroz post match comments regarding all which surrounded that penalty issue were those of a bad loser, just like his tutor.

Would you like to hear someone slagging you off on the box knowing full well you were spot on for ninety minutes in a hostile atmosphere and could not answer back?

Ref Alan Wiley was exactly that and I would imagine that a ref becomes immune to such afters and simply drives away knowing that another notch is under his belt.

Leading from the front is the way to generate discipline as Jeff has pointed out but some will neither listen nor learn because the refs are the quicker scapegoats.

Finally, congratulations to Manchester United on reaching the European Cup Final...
