TEES VALLEY DRIVE TO FIND ENTREPRENEURS OF TOMORROW LAUNCHED BY CABINET MINISTER
By Middlesbrough FC

A new initiative to inspire people across Tees Valley to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow will be launched by Secretary of State for Business and The Regions, Rt Hon John Hutton, on Friday.

Mr Hutton will officially launch the Make Your Mark in Tees Valley campaign when he visits Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community’s Enterprise Academy.

Make Your Mark is the national campaign to create an enterprise culture by giving people the inspiration and opportunity to turn their ideas into reality, whether through starting businesses or social enterprises or by making an idea happen at work. It co-ordinates Enterprise Week in November each year – which saw over 500,000 people take part in enterprise-related activities in 2007 across the UK, with over 50 events in Tees Valley alone.

The campaign in Tees Valley aims to inspire thousands of people to be more entrepreneurial in the area over the next few years – helping to boost the region’s economy.  Make Your Mark in Tees Valley works closely with local and national organisations to give young people the opportunity to experience what it’s like to develop an idea into a business proposal and make it a success.

The team will work closely with the Middlesbrough FC Enterprise Academy to reach young people across the area with innovative ways to engage them in enterprising activities and show them what they can achieve by starting their own business or social enterprise.

During his visit, the Secretary of State will also see enterprise activities in action at the highly acclaimed Enterprise Academy, with pupils from the town’s MacMillan Academy and Ormesby School. The Academy engages young people by using the football club as a business model and encouraging them to devise ideas to promote and develop it as a business.

Pamela Hargreaves, Head of Campaign for Make Your Mark in Tees Valley, says: “The launch of the Make Your Mark campaign in the Tees Valley coincides with some fantastic changes and developments. The campaign is here to inspire local people to make their ideas happen and help find the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. We work closely with a wide range of organisations and this launch helps to highlight some of the fantastic work being done in the area by many organisations such as the MFC Enterprise Academy.”

Anthony Emmerson, Manager of the Enterprise Academy, said: "Using Middlesbrough FC as a business model to engage and inspire, the Enterprise Academy has benefited more than 30,000 young people aged 11 to 19 from across the Tees Valley over the past six years.

Paul Callaghan, Executive Board Member at One NorthEast, said: “It’s vital we offer as much support to young people and adults as we can, to encourage them that they can pursue self employment and entrepreneurship as a serious career.

“As the regional development agency for the North East, we know how important it is that young people are given every possible chance to turn their ideas into businesses.”
