BORO SHOW RED CARD TO RACISM
By Middlesbrough FC
Supporters have been warned that racist abuse will not be tolerated at the Riverside Stadium following the arrest of a woman at a recent home match.
Plain-clothed officers from Cleveland Police’s Football Intelligence Unit responded to complaints about discriminatory comments being directed at black players at the home match with Wigan on January 29. A 44-year-old woman attended Middlesbrough Police Office and received a caution for the offence.
She has been banned from future matches at the Riverside Stadium and Middlesbrough FC has warned that an equally tough line will be taken towards other offenders.
“We are proud of our record on combating racism at the Riverside and fortunately it has never been a major problem,” said a spokesman. “Nevertheless we are certainly not complacent and will crack down hard on any incidence of racist abuse.
“We work closely with the Kick it Out and Show Racism the Red Card organisations in combating racism and are determined to uphold our reputation as a family-friendly stadium where people of all races and religions are given equal respect.”
Detective Constable John Stokeld, from the Football Intelligence Unit, said: “Going to a football match is very much a family event, and the last thing you want your children to hear is racist insults being shouted at the players.
“Cleveland Police is committed to the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and we are determined to stamp out racism on the terraces to ensure that the game can be enjoyed by everyone.
“Any fans who hear racist of prejudicial shouts at football matches can contact the Football Intelligence Unit on 01642 326326, and we will investigate.”
