ALASTAIR BROWNLEE'S BORO v ARSENAL MATCH PREVIEW 7-12-07

The Sunday showdown with an Arsenal side that not only head the Premier League but are also unbeaten domestically this season, gives Boro a chance to roll up their sleeves and produce one of the shock results of the season.
A victory over the Gunners, bearing in mind that Boro are in the relegation zone and without a win since September, certainly seems an unlikely outcome.
However Newcastle showed on Wednesday that Arsenal can be vulnerable and the Magpies did have enough chances to win the match before having to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Boro will also be boosted by the news that Arsene Wenger's side are likely to be without the services of key players such as Flamini, Hleb and Van Persie. Fabregas, who is already a candidate for player of the season, will also be missing.
By contrast Boro have received good news this week on the injury front. Julio Arca and Robert Huth both featured in the reserves' defeat at Sunderland, whilst Mark Schwarzer could make a return after breaking his thumb in training. Gary O'Neil has also recovered from a virus.
When speaking with Gareth Southgate after the 1-1 draw at Reading last Saturday, I could sense how pleased he was not only with the point but with the way his side battled back after going a goal behind.
So although Boro slipped a place after the draw at the Madejski Stadium, there were some encouraging signs, particularly with Tuncay getting his first goal for the club.
Tuncay arrived in the summer with a great repuation - just ask any Boro fan who was on holiday in Turkey just how highly the local fans rate the striker. However a combination of injury and taking time to adapt to the Premier League has limited his impact so far.
It was obvious from his celebration at Reading just how much the goal meant to him and if he could now find the net on a regular basis, then the team should start to move away from the drop zone.
The media attention on Sunday will probably surround Jeremie Aliadiere coming up against the Gunners for the first time since his close season transfer from the Emirates.
I thought that Aliadiere was terrific at Reading. He was my man of the match as he never gave the opposition defenders a moment's peace. Naturally he will be fired up facing the club that gave him a start in the game so let's hope the old football cliche that a player usually scores against his old club comes true.
Away from the Arsenal match build up, news broke that Gaizka Mendieta will retire from football when his Boro contract expires at the end of the season.
Whilst it is true that we never witnessed the form from Mendieta that saw him captain Valencia to successive Champions League finals and tempted Lazio to sign him for £32 million, he did play his part in some big games for Boro.
Mendieta was, of course, part of the team that defeated Bolton in the Carling Cup Final of 2004 but for me, his finest display was against Manchester United on 29 October 2005.
In that match "Mendy" scored the opening goal after just two minutes and then rounded off the Boro goals with his second and our fourth twelve minutes from time.
The 4-1 final score line could have been much greater and Mendieta tormented United all afternoon.
Sadly, he picked up another injury shortly afterwards but on that Riverside afternoon we had a glimpse of a midfielder, who in his prime, was one of the best midfielders in Europe.
I am sure that all Boro fans will wish him all the best for the future after he hangs up his boots in May.
May I also say a few words of praise for the Boro fans who supported the team at Reading on Saturday. They were terrific. If we could just repeat the noise and enthusiasm on Sunday at the Riverside it would give the players such a lift. It could be the difference between the team getting something from the match or not.
Before the game on Sunday Bernie and I will be taking to the airwaves again with Simply Red Sunday from 11am until 1 pm on Century fm.
The show will be broadcast from the Hillstreet Shopping Centre in Middlesbrough enabling us to make a quick dash to the Riverside for kick off.
There will be all the usual features including a chance to win Sunday lunch for two at the Bluebell Hotel, Acklam Road, Middlesbrough.
Special guests this week will include Dave Hodgson and John Hendrie so why not give us a call on the usual number 08450021100 or text the show on 85102.
As the festive season is not too far away and presents are currently being purchased, I would recommend the calendar that the Middlesbrough Former Players Association has published for 2008.
It is priced at just £5 and looks back over a century of Boro history with great photos of stars such as Wilf Mannion, George Hardwick, Brian Clough and Juninho.
The Association was set up to help Boro players who were not fortunate enough to play in an era when footballers received such high wages and who may now have fallen on hard times.
The committee includes Gordon Jones, Alan Peacock and Jim Platt and I hope that Boro fans give them the support their hard work deserves.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
