Three points off Bolton on Saturday would not only mathematically ensure that Boro retain their Premier League status, but would also continue an improved run of form that has seen the side lose only once since the FA Cup heartbreak at the hands of Cardiff City.

Gareth Southgate is, naturally, looking beyond mere survival and with three out of the remaining four fixtures at the Riverside, there is not only the opportunity to end the campaign with a flourish but also the financial bonus that goes with how high the team finishes in the table.

In addition, there is the not so small matter of ending the season as the top team in the North-East. With Newcastle facing Sunderland on Sunday before Boro travel to the Stadium of Light a week on Saturday, the local bragging rights are very much up for grabs.

Boro go into the clash with the Wanderers with the half time tongue lashing from the manager at White Hart Lane still ringing in the players' ears.

The verbal outburst from the boss for a below par first forty five minutes at Spurs not only had the desired effect of a much improved display that earned a point (and might have produced a win), but also proved that Gareth can be tough when called upon.

The way in which Gareth conducts himself in the media projects an image far removed from a boss who likes to throw the cups around at half time. But his determination to stand up to Sir Alex Ferguson during the last home game and his laying down the law at Spurs proves that he can be a tough taskmaster when called upon.

The aim this weekend will be for a ninety minute display as good as the second half at the Lane and if that can be found then Boro should be too good for Bolton and make Gareth’s half time talk a little easier!

It should be a cracking match at the Riverside, as Wanderers breathed new life into their relegation battle with a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Reebok Stadium. However, Gary Megson will be without Kevin Davies, who scored the only goal against the Hammers, due to suspension.

Davies would not have made the game on Saturday even if he had not been harshly booked against West Ham, as he is injured but to lose the player who is the focus of their attacks is clearly a big blow to the visitors.

Boro first came across Davies back in April 1997 in the classic FA Cup semi final with Chesterfield at Old Trafford.

The striker served notice of his ability to trouble defences and now, aged 31, he has the experience to go with his commanding physical presence. Both Pogatetz and Wheater will therefore be pleased to see the opposition line up without their main striker.

Emanuel Pogatetz has relished the responsibility of the role as captain in recent games but the manager is in no hurry to make a permanent appointment as skipper, although he is delighted with the way the Austrian has taken to wearing the armband.

After starting the season with George Boateng as skipper, then giving Julio Arca the job, it looks as if Gareth will use the rest of the season and then the summer to reflect on who will lead the side out in August.

One setback this week was the news that Gary O’Neil had to undergo an operation following a knee injury picked up at Spurs. O’Neil will now miss the rest of the season but hopes to be back with the squad when they return for pre-season training.

O’Neil and Luke Young had formed a good partnership on the right side of midfield but with Aliadiere, Tuncay and Johnson all able to play in that position there is an opportunity to impress the manager in the four games that remain.

Looking back through the Century Radio archives to find a classic win over the Wanderers, one of my favourites is a 4-3 win at the Riverside on 26 March 2006.

Not only was the game a seven-goal thriller but also the Boro winner came in the last minute from one of the most unlikely sources as defender Stuart Parnaby scored in front on the New Holgate End.

Stuart will be a guest on Simply Red Sunday on Century Radio as Bernie and I will, hopefully, be reflecting on a great win over Bolton, and then start the build up to the big derby at Sunderland.

There will be all the usual features, including the chance to win Sunday Lunch for two at the Bluebell Hotel, Acklam Road, Middlesbrough.

We will also, no doubt, be talking about the season ticket prices for next season which include the great offer of a season card for those aged under eighteen priced at £95 for anywhere in the stadium.

It really is a great opportunity to ensure that the future generation of Boro fans have the chance to get to see their heroes in action, and I hope that it encourages a full stadium for the big kick off in August.

So why not give us a call on the usual number 08450021100 or send a text to 85102.

Up the Boro!!

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
