The pain felt at Daryl Murphy’s last gasp goal at the Stadium of Light which settled the Wear –Tees derby in Sunderland’s favour was not just a blow to local pride but also a realisation that work still has to be done to ensure Boro retain their top flight status.

Until the Murphy strike, a 2-2 draw was looking a good return for a Boro side that had taken the lead through Tuncay and then battled back to equalise thanks to Afonso Alves.

Sadly, all that was spoiled by the home side's winner. This had the Sunderland fans celebrating survival and left Boro to concentrate on getting the points they need from the home games with Portsmouth and Manchester City.

A win over Harry Redknapp's FA Cup finalists would, of course, be enough but caution is provided not only with the visitor's good record at the Riverside - where they have not lost a Premier League game - but also in their form away from home this season.

Portsmouth have won nine games on opposition territory this season. Only Chelsea with twelve wins have won more and it will be a test of nerve if Pompey take the lead as they are the only side with a 100% record in games where they have scored first. Fourteen times Portsmouth have taken the lead and on each occasion they have ended up with three points.

It is Gareth Southgate’s seventy-fifth Premier League match as Boro boss and his selection problems seemed to have eased as Mark Schwarzer could return after missing both the Bolton and Sunderland games through a back injury. Jeremie Aliadiere also has a good chance of making a comeback on Saturday after missing the derby.

Gareth is confident in his players' ability to get the right result on Saturday and record a double over Portsmouth after the 1-0 win at Fratton Park back in December.

On that occasion the winning goal came from Tuncay and there were signs at the Stadium of Light last Saturday that his partnership with Alves could pay a rich dividend for Boro, not only in the games that remain this season, but also looking ahead to the next campaign.

Stewart Downing will pass a personal milestone on Saturday when he makes his 150th career league appearance.

Downing is a contender for the player of the year award after starting every Premier League game this season and making a positive contribution in the goals for column.

Gareth Southgate believes that Downing has taken his game up an extra notch this season with the addition of goals to his game and securing the winger's signature to a new deal has been one of the major plusses of the season.

The manager is hopeful of a big atmosphere at the Riverside on Saturday and the club are urging fans to wear their favourite home shirt, together with bringing along banners and scarves to create a sea of red to show their support.

The fans will, no doubt, respond but there has to be a determination during the close season to find a way of returning the Riverside to a Boro fortress for the next campaign. Boro have the third weakest form at home and only Derby have scored fewer goals in front of their own fans than Boro's return of seventeen.

The game will represent Boro's 250th league match at the Riverside and looking back over the years to the stadium's opening in 1995, there have been many memorable ninety minutes.

My top three would include the magic of the opening day on 26 August 1995 when Boro defeated Chelsea 2-0 as Craig Hignett scored the first ever goal at the new home; Ravanelli's sensational debut twelve months later as Boro and Liverpool played out a thrilling 3-3 draw; and the 4-1 hammering of Manchester United in October 2005.

Hopefully, we will be celebrating a three-point display on Saturday to mark the 250th milestone and can then start to look ahead to regrouping in the summer to get it right next time.

Bernie and I will be reacting to the game on Simply Red on Century Radio this Sunday from 11 until 1pm.

There will be all the usual features including the chance to win Sunday lunch for two at the Bluebell Hotel, Acklam Road, Middlesbrough and the opportunity to win a pair of tickets courtesy of Ladbrokes for the final match of the season at home to Manchester City on Sunday May 11.

There is also the chance to win a pair of executive tickets thanks to the Hillstreet Shopping Centre for the Manchester City game.

Special guests will include one of the all time great Boro strikers, Alan Peacock, and former midfielder, now boss north of the border with Livingston, Mark Proctor.

So why not join in the fun by giving us a call on our usual number 08450021100 or send a text to 85102.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
