SOCCER SPOTLIGHT 4-9-07
Jeff Winter

Well let's see if this week's article can generate another 7,500 hits on my website and another 350 emails, mostly from Tyneside.
As I never get it in our house I intend to have the final word on the 'Geordie Timelords' article and my responses to the goings on at the derby will be posted on www.jeffwinter.co.uk over the next few days.
Well only 23,000 for the Brum game and didn't those who stayed away miss out. To listen to the noise and the atmosphere on Saturday just made me think what it would be like if another 12,000 were there.
Hopefully word will get around that the new Boro are worth watching and soon we will not be laughing stocks around the country for our empty seats.
I am really pleased for Gareth that he is finally getting his squad together and playing the type of football that he promised when he took over. I think he realised pretty quickly that it was going to take longer to revolutionise the squad he inherited. We are getting there now and with just the odd player still to get off the payroll he should be happy.
I think a lot of people, myself included, would have liked to see another striker brought in. But after the performance on Saturday I will hold my judgement. Well I will have to won't I, 'cos we are knackered now till January.
The results on the pitch take our minds off other things however and when things are going well then everything in the garden is rosy, if results turn then the bandwagon of discontent rumbles on.
One thing that does give me cause for concern though is the battle in the press box, i.e. the comments made about former players being critical of the club. Now you don't have to be a brain surgeon to work out who they are talking about, do you.
Some have criticised Eric Paylor, myself and others of being on the club's payroll and always defending them. Personally nothing can be further from the truth. If being an avid fan who wants the club to succeed is a crime then guilty as charged my lord, take me down.
I think that the jobs both Paul and Gary do at BBC Tees and Ali and Bernie do for Century and also Eric and Anthony at the Gazette are brilliant. Perhaps Bernie, Vic and myself are a bit more extreme, but in the media world people want opinions, they want passion and we do invite controversy and feelings. That's what gets people to turn on the radio, TV and buy newspapers.
In my short time in the press box I have noticed not only a camaraderie amongst the journalists but also a love and genuine care for the Boro. I must admit at times I was a little surprised that in what you would imagine is a very competitive industry how helpful people were to each other, something I had not been previously used to in the cut throat back stabbing world of refereeing. Faced with using new equipment for the first time on numerous occasions Ali or Gordon Cox would offer guidance.
We are all different and have different styles, none of us are everybody's cup of tea, but hey that's the beauty of the media. You don't have to buy a paper and there is an off switch on the TV and the radio.
Football is passionate, it creates so many varied talking points and it always will do and I hope that we are all allowed to continue to speak our minds.
I have had many a verbal or written war with people since I gave up the whistle and it is surprising that after communications have been exchanged how feelings change. I make a comparison to school yard fights and how often your foe in the fight becomes a friend afterwards.
Those of us who love the Boro and are in the public eye fortunately have a chance to communicate and we are entitled to our opinions and have freedom of speech and long may it continue.
Let's bury the hatchet and get back to doing what we do best - supporting the Boro.
On a lighter note David Easson and myself at TFM have recorded (badly) a little ditty about Mido, you can listen to it by clicking here.
Tune in every Saturday from 12 till 2 for Soccer Saturday and then from 5.30 till 7pm for The Jeff Winter Football Phone-In.
Enjoy your football.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
