YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE BOOING 4-12-07
Jeff Winter

Whenever I am asked a question about something that I have absolutely no knowledge of at all (and that's a lot of things by the way) I don't offer an opinion. I am sure you are probably the same.
Politics and world issues are subjects that, although they should interest me, I don't have the sufficient knowledge or understanding to make a valid contribution in discussions.
Then how come we are all experts when it comes to football?
Let's be honest - the vast majority of supporters have never played the game at any significant level and would not have the first idea of how to coach players or to plan tactics.
I sit at a ground and see Luke Young on the right touchline with his head down and with an opponent closing in on him. He is screamed at by "Mr. Tactical Genius" sat in the stand to use Downing, who is eighty yards away on the far side of the pitch.
Whilst it is annoying to listen to these goons who know the game inside out and who are brought up on the comments of so called "experts" on TV, it is also amusing.
Having said that I did not know whether to laugh or cry when reading some of the views of Boro fans in the recent Gazette articles that posed the questions as to what is wrong and what should be done to correct the situation at Middlesbrough.
Despite what some of my critics say about me - that I am just a fan and that I know nothing - I was actually on a football pitch and do know a little bit about the tactics that players use during a game. We were trained in this.
I always enjoy sitting next to Bernie and Gary Gill in the press box. This is because they read a game so well and see things that the rest of us would not even think about.
The great thing with football though is that we all can dream that Championship Manager is the real thing and that we all know best.
Having an opinion is one thing but allowing our feelings to turn to stupidity and then allowing them to become an opportunity to use personal abuse is another.
I do speak with some knowledge of the personal stuff, thanks to being a referee. I, along with many of my former colleagues, did make mistakes. That did not make us useless. All it meant was that during the course of ninety minutes we did get the odd thing wrong.
Players do it and so do managers.
According to many of the louder frustrated mouths out there, Gareth Southgate is useless, clueless and tactically naive. Agreed he has not got the obligatory piece of paper to say that he is qualified but he does have a sack full of England caps.
As a player we all adored him as a leader and an organizer on the field who showed empathy and passion with and towards the fans.
Now, he has suddenly lost all those attributes.
The expert fans call for Wheater and Huth to play up front!! I presume that is because of their height. I see their point and as a last ditch effort to try and salvage something from a game I agree.
But with the very odd exception (Dion Dublin springs to mind), defenders are defenders and forwards are forwards.
Southgate must go they shout. I have yet to hear a credible alternative to be put forward. The Special One is not coming, I can assure you.
Quite incredibly some are calling for Steve Gibson to go.
Well until Abramovic Two appears, unlikely as that is, we are well and truly stuck with the man who saved the club and is known throughout the game as the best Chairman around.
He does not knee-jerk like the idiots who run Derby County Football Club. Their decision to sack Billy Davies was nothing short of unbelievable.
Some doubt the passion of the players, well to see the reaction of Tuncay and the lads when the equalizer went in on Saturday dispels that theory.
No doubt my comments will not meet with agreement or approval from some of you. That's fine - everyone is entitled to an opinion.
Please feel free to email me via my website and I will personally answer your queries. If you feel strongly enough then pick up the phone on a Saturday evening from 5.30 till 7pm on 01642 616666 and give me your viewpoint.
Alternatively you could post messages on the boards calling me a cock or other such childish names. No doubt the same people who scream and shout are those that don't have a sensible alternative solution to the club's present predicament.
The one thing that we all have in common is that we love the Boro.
The nation will be tuning in on Sunday, to see the TV cameras pan across the industrial landscape, mock the empty seats and to see Super Arsenal hammer the relegation certainties.
Well if it happens it happens but if we all are in it together then who knows? Bolton beat Man United so anything can happen. Enjoy!!

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
