THE AWAY END - WHERE'S WALLY? 18-3-08

In The Away End a few weeks ago I referred to the ‘Where’s Wally?’ series of books that I used to have many a happy hour looking at with my kids when they were younger.
I say looking at because there were no words. The idea was that you had to spot Wally – a geeky looking chap in a hooped jumper and bobble hat - in a very complex drawing with thousands of jostling figures in an exotic setting.
I am fast becoming the Delia of ComeOnBoro.com because I read The Sunday Times best seller list last Sunday and way out on top, above the nobel prize winners, sudoku manuals and bonkbusters was ‘Where’s Wally?’.
When I saw that, I tried to recall if there was a scene in the books set in Belo Horizonte. Why? Well, one website correspondent reported hearing a commentary on the Arsenal game in Dubai where the comment was made:
“Alves has gone missing… he went back to Brazil after the Cardiff game.”
Anthony Vickers of The Evening Gazette confirmed:
“There is mystery over Alves as he is variously described as "ill" and "injured". Gate also said he took it maturely when he wasn't involved in midweek but if you are ill what has maturity got to do with it? Hmmmmm.”
One of the rumours that was circulating when we bought him was that he (and our other supposed target, Fred) were prone to a dose of the Emersons.
If Alves has gone AWOL, it needs jumping on now. If he wants to be picked for the team he has to be told that he must be fit and firing to justify the big fee. This includes not whinging about "that big boy over there knocked me over" which Mido seemed to be saying that he had.
Deserting now can’t be good for team morale. Either that or team morale may improve but only because they’ve all got the same hate figure in the squad. This won’t endear him to supporters who are already beginning to ask questions.
I also think that the club must be honest. If he has gone AWOL then say so and deal with it like Moyes dealt with Yakubu. It can only improve things and show that Gate is emerging as the manager Wenger says he can be.
If he hasn’t gone AWOL then show him in training or in the treatment room and scotch the rumours now.
As fans we deserve to be told the truth, especially after what we have endured recently.
Unless some questions are asked – and answered - we’re liable to have more evasion and cryptic answers before the Derby game.
If Alves is AWOL and now that Mido’s suspension hasn't been lifted, we may find ourselves – help! – with Simba on the bench again!
