THE LONG VIEW - WATCH MY LIPS 14-1-08
Steve Morley

Friday afternoon story [and what the fans think, in plain English]
Boro boss Gareth Southgate was giving little away this afternoon amid a frenzy of speculation linking Boro with a host of top strikers.
[Everything is up in the air as players, agents and managers jockey for squabbling positions with agents determined to redefine the meaning of greed while Steve Gibson refuses to be held to ransom]
Brazilian hotshots Afonso Alves and Fred are among the names the club are said to be tracking as the January transfer merry-go-round gets into gear.
Current Dutch Player of the Year Alves, 26, scored a stunning thirty-four goals last season, while Lyon's Fred, 24, has long been tipped as one of the country's most promising striking talents.
[Alves is playing in the European equivalent of a Sunday League, with one or two notable exceptions, and Fred's manager is desperate to offload a player who's not performing. "Long been tipped" gives the game away. After playing one blinding game he's reverted to being crap]
England forwards Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch, and veterans Cristiano Lucarelli of Shakhtar Donetsk and Hakan Sukur of Galatasaray, have also been mentioned as possible targets.
[God help us, a Spurs no mark, an aberration of nature, and two walking stick strikers who are desperate for one last whoppingly large pay day before they sink into oblivion]
But asked today whether there were any developments to report Southgate said:
"No. We've been linked with everybody and a lot of our players have been linked with moves. At the moment we haven't made any bids for any players and we haven't received any bids for any players.
"We've made enquiries about players at other clubs and had one or two enquiries about our players going to other clubs on loan. But as we stand here there's nothing doing really."
[We're hitting the phones frantically, the wires are burning hot, we're getting wild offers but nothing has been nailed down]
Southgate has previously hinted that there would be no big money signings during the transfer window but the speculation has continued unabated.
[We're not setting ourselves up to be mugged]
As for whether there would be any major outgoings, Southgate said nobody would leave unless he believed it was right for the club.
Asked whether he had to sell to buy he said:
"It depends on how much we're going to spend. We don't have a bottomless pit but we will only sell players if it's right for the club. I don't think that's the case right now. You want to keep everybody who's happy to be here.
"As far as I'm concerned nobody leaves unless it's for the benefit of the club, whether financially or playing-wise. We've no plans for that to happen at this moment in time but things can change overnight in football."
[We've had offers for Boateng but the price is not right. We're mulling over how much we'll get for Downing. We've made a wage increase offer but we're fed up with his voracious agent trying to extract more money. If we get a good price and it'll fund the Alves purchase, he'll go.]
"We're all realistic about that, we know transfer deals happen and can happen very quickly. We would like to strengthen if we can but we're not in a position where that's close at the moment."
[We're in the middle of frantic negotiations and it could all go tits up at the last moment, so I'm saying nothing until everything is finalised]

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
