THE WEEK ON THE TEES 16-4-08
Luke Raine

We are approaching the stage of the season when the so-called “mid-table” sides are facing off against each other and are participating in games which don’t mean much.

Some may argue that Boro’s season has finished – the team are almost certainly safe from the threat of relegation and have little chance of finishing in the top half of the table.

I personally have the opposite approach to our last four games.

I think after all that has been said by Gareth Southgate in the past few weeks, the team should be targeting ten points from the last four fixtures.

A points return around this mark should certainly not be out of the question. Three of our last four games are at home against teams we should be looking to beat.

Bolton are in the drop zone, Manchester City have been woeful away from home this season and Portsmouth will have a certain Cup final on their minds.

Ten points from the next four fixtures should also see the side reclaim their title of “best side in the North-East”. This should surely act as an incentive for the players involved.

As for last weekend’s game, although the fixture at White Hart Lane typified our season, I think a lot can be taken from the second half at least. We looked like a good side and, week by week, Southgate is getting more praise in the media for the way he is going about his business.

I also believe that Jonathan Grounds will learn a lot from the game at Tottenham. He will be the first to admit that he probably didn’t have the best of games up against England international Aaron Lennon.

But there is no doubt that Grounds will learn twice as much from this game as opposed to what he could have learned in a mid-week game for the Reserves. The saying “you only learn from your mistakes” comes to mind.

It was also good to see England boss Fabio Capello taking in the game at Spurs, particularly considering the amount of young English talent on show from both sides. I have to say though, that if Luke Young doesn’t make the next England squad then questions have to be asked.

This column has been an advocate for Young gaining a place in the squad for some time and my opinion on this matter has only become stronger over the last few months.

I doubt that there are many more consistent performers in that position in the league – foreign or English. I can count on one hand the number of bad games Young has had for the club in his maiden season.

One thing that did make me laugh in the past week was the way Capello’s reaction to Theo Walcott’s performance in the Champions League quarter final was reported.

On Thursday, The Sun reported that Walcott had impressed Capello and quoted the Italian raving about the goal he created, saying that Walcott would probably have some part to play in his next England squad.

However in The Telegraph the day after the game, it was reported that Capello had left Anfield with ten minutes to go. This meant that he actually missed Walcott’s great piece on skill in the flesh and most probably made his judgement from a television replay.

If it had been Steve McClaren making those quotes then I am pretty sure that the media attention it received would have been slightly greater.

Most Boro fans will have enjoyed sitting back and watching the Manchester United versus Arsenal game last Sunday. Although there is a lot of displeasure about the way Sky Sports favour the big teams, no one can deny that the game was a great footballing spectacle.

That result, coupled with Chelsea’s stumble at home to Wigan Athletic on Monday evening, means that the title is almost certainly heading back to Old Trafford – and deservedly so.

That point they picked up at the Riverside now looks like a massive point gained rather than two carelessly lost.

One of the biggest footballing stories this week has been the fall out at Liverpool between the owner and the chief executive.

Childish boardroom squabbles like these make Boro fans realise just how lucky they are to have a solid chairman who keeps his nose out of team affairs.

It makes you wonder how well Liverpool would have done domestically this season had none of these rumblings been made public.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
