THE WEEK ON THE TEES 30-4-08
Luke Raine

Another week passes and Boro fans are left wondering just why their team are incapable of seizing the initiative.

After equalising on Saturday, the team had the perfect opportunity to push on and mathematically secure their Premier League status.

Their failure to do this, coupled with good results for Fulham, Birmingham and Bolton, have left the team sweating over their status as a Premier League side.

The truth is that in most other Premier League seasons, the team would be in the mire after collecting just thirty-six points with two games remaining. After all, it wasn’t long ago that West Ham were relegated with forty-two.

I don’t expect the team to go down but that is as much down to the teams around us being of a poor standard as it is the confidence I have in our team. In truth, the performances haven’t been as bad as one win in ten league outings suggests but there is certainly a problem when it comes to killing off the opposition.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane was a winner as a player and that is rubbing off on his squad. Nine points gained in the final five minutes of matches this season is a fantastic record. I am not saying that Gareth Southgate hasn’t got the potential to become a great manager, but what did he win in his career?

Luke Young summed it up when he said that opposing teams maybe see Boro as a “soft touch”. How many times do teams on a bad run or in desperate need of points beat us? Reading visited The Riverside on the back of eight straight defeats and won, while Bolton needed a maximum urgently and did the same.

The team simply cannot afford a repeat of this against Portsmouth on Saturday, who will surely show an improvement themselves after three straight defeats.

Elsewhere this week, it has been reported that Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is to be sacked in the summer. Football owners have been given a bad reputation when it comes to manager retention over recent years but this must surely be the most ludicrous decision of them all.

To take a team who couldn’t score a goal at home for six months to the top ten of the Premier League in a season is a great effort. You only need to look as far as a club like ours to realise how hard it is to break into that half of the table.

The Swede may not have been the most popular figure with England fans, but after masterminding a league double over city rivals United, he must surely have secured a place in the hearts of fans from the blue half of Manchester.

There must come a point when these owners realise that changing the manager every five minutes doesn’t do the team any good whatsoever. Just look at the mess Bolton have got themselves into this season.

The title race also looks like it will be going into the final weekend after Chelsea’s deserved win over Manchester United. I have enjoyed watching United this season but the behaviour of their players after the final whistle was a disgrace.

Only on Saturday morning it was reported that Rio Ferdinand was in pole position regarding the England captaincy. Then within a few hours, he had reacted in a way that has led me to loathe players like him and John Terry.

Harassing the referee during the game and then kicking out at a wall/steward afterwards is no way for an England captain to behave. The way Ferdinand missed a huge wall and made contact with the steward must leave a lot to be desired when it comes to his technique too.

It makes me wonder if someone like Gareth Barry would be better suited to the England captaincy. Have you ever heard him get any bad press? He is rarely involved in any controversy on the pitch and a move to one of the big four in the summer will surely result in him becoming an England regular. Over 300 Premier League appearances cannot be frowned upon for a twenty-seven year old either.

Finally this week, it is that time of the year when the rumour mill goes into hyperdrive and the tabloids start getting excited about who will be moving where in the summer.

I am aware that most of this is paper talk but it still can’t stop me from becoming unconvinced about potential targets in the summer window. Steve Sidwell or Giles Barnes anyone? Not for me.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
