THE WEEK ON THE TEES 7-5-08
Luke Raine
The Premier League is often labelled the "best league in the world" and with an all English Champions League Final, it would be perhaps foolish to suggest otherwise.
However Kevin Keegan hit the nail on the head on Monday when he claimed that there was no chance that the top four teams in The Premier League would be different next season. This could lead to one of “the most boring but great leagues in the world.”
It makes you wonder why fans of Stoke were celebrating so much over the weekend. Their team will play Premier League football next season but by Christmas, the gloss will well and truly have worn off and their team will be relegated.
The same will be true of the winners of the play-off finals this month and probably West Brom too.
People could also argue that the Premier League is the most exciting in the world because the relegation battle is going down to the wire. The only reason this is happening is that the standard outside the top four teams in this league has been desperately poor this season.
Fulham could stay up this season with thirty-three points, whereas at the start of the season every team in the division (apart from the big four, of course) target forty points just to be safe for another season. That is a difference of seven points and two wins and a draw is a lot when you are fighting for your lives for an entire season.
Back to The Championship and the difference between the team finishing in the final relegation spot (Leicester City) and the side finishing in the final play-off spot (Watford) was eighteen points.
This means that six wins can, in theory, separate you by two divisions.
The difference between eighteenth and fourth place in The Premier League is currently forty points. This is more than the team relegated will have acquired in a whole season. This proves that the “Big Four” are literally a league apart from the rest.
Referring again to The Championship, I am sure many of you will have chosen to watch those games on Sunday compared to the almost meaningless games on offer from the Premier League. The games were fraught with tension if maybe lacking a degree of quality.
It was Leicester who eventually went down and it is not hard to understand why. Five different managers in a season borders on unbelievable in my opinion, and for that reason alone, they deserved to be relegated. It was also good to see former Boro captain Nigel Pearson keeping a Southampton side afloat who looked doomed a few weeks ago.
It is now that time of the year when the play-offs take over. This will lead to every pundit in the land describing them as a “lottery”. If not that, they are certainly entertaining and it would also be nice to see North-East neighbours Darlington come into some form and gain promotion too.
I haven’t mentioned Boro directly yet in this piece and that is on purpose. The side secured safety last week and the season overall can be described as a mini success if you like.
The team will be competing in the Premier League next season and Gareth Southgate has done a steady if unspectacular job. Next season is make or break time for him as a manager and he will be the first to admit this.
All that's left is Sunday’s visit of Manchester City, where the visitors will be looking to provide a great send off for their departing manager Sven Goran Erikkson. It also gives the players a good opportunity to send the fans off for the summer in style by recording a seventh home win of the season.
Finally this week, the Football Association has issued new manager Fabio Capello with a target of reaching either the semi finals of the World Cup in 2010 or the 2012 European Championships.
The FA are forgetting that it is an attitude like this – presuming we will automatically qualify for a tournament – that resulted in the team sitting at home this summer while there is a tournament going on in Austria and Switzerland.
Maybe The FA should focus on making small steps first with the national side. Capello isn’t a magician and the team certainly won’t become world beaters overnight.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
