ALASTAIR BROWNLEE'S BIG MATCH PREVIEW - LIVERPOOL v MIDDLESBROUGH 22-8-08
Alastair Brownlee

Boro will take the feel good factor from the opening day victory over Spurs into the trip to Anfield as they attempt to pick up their first win at Liverpool since 1976 when goals from Terry Cooper and John Hickton secured all three points for Jack Charlton’s men.
There were so many positives to take out of last Saturday's Riverside opener. The team put in a terrific display to thoroughly deserve the points and record the first opening day success since August 2000, but just as important was the attendance of just under 33,000.
The club have worked hard to try and re-establish a close relationship with the supporters, with the prices for young supporters a particular plus, and the fans responded by creating an atmosphere that was closer to a cup tie than a league game.
If the level of performance both on and off the pitch can be repeated throughout the season then Boro will really have created “Fortress Riverside” and it should be a place that opposition sides fear coming to.
The training ground has been a relatively quiet place this week as a number of players have been on international duty. As Gareth Southgate mentioned the club had six weeks to prepare for the Spurs match but will just have the players together for a couple of days to get ready for the demands of playing Gerrard and co!
International recognition both at full level, and for David Wheater, Andrew Taylor and Adam Johnson at England under 21 level, is however a clear indicator of the level of ability within the squad and something that everyone at the club is proud of.
Stewart Downing will pass another milestone at Liverpool as the winger will make his 200th career appearance.
Downing picked up another cap in midweek and a quality display at Anfield will enforce the case that he should be the choice for Fabio Capello on the left side of England’s midfield in the World Cup qualifiers that start this month.
Downing has been a first team regular for so long that it is easy to forget that he is just 24 and is still maturing as a footballer.
Looking back over the time I have been following the Boro, Downing is, in my opinion, the best left sided player I have seen, and that includes David Armstrong who was the outstanding winger of the Jack Charlton promotion winning side of 1974.
“Spike” Armstrong made 428 appearances in his Ayresome Park career that spanned 1970-81 and let’s hope that Downing remains on course to beat that outstanding record.
The main danger to Boro's Anfield ambition will be Fernando Torres who was outstanding for Spain in their European Championship success in the summer and opened his Premier League account for the season with the winning goal at Sunderland last season.
The selection of who will be chosen to tame Torres will be an interesting one as the back four performed well as a unit last Saturday, but Justin Hoyte is now available for his debut after his £3million move from Arsenal and that will give Gareth Southgate a selection puzzle to solve before kick off.
The match at Anfield is Boro's 500th Premier League game and it is appropriate that Boro face Liverpool on this occasion as Boro have played the Merseysiders more than any other side in the history of the club.
After, fingers crossed, a three point display Boro then take the first steps on a road that will, hopefully, lead to Carling Cup glory as they face Yeovil on Tuesday night at the Riverside.
Yeovil will deserve respect after all they put Charlton out of the competition in the last round, but Boro should be too strong for the league one side and, hopefully, move into the next round.
You can follow all the Boro action on BBC Tees. Mark Drury, Gary Gill and I will be at Anfield from 2pm on Saturday and then at the Riverside for the Carling Cup tie from 6pm on Tuesday.
Up the Boro

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
