ALASTAIR BROWNLEE'S BIG MATCH PREVIEW - ASTON VILLA v MIDDLESBROUGH 8-11-08
Alastair Brownlee

Boro’s recent upturn in form will receive its most serious test yet as they travel to face an Aston Villa side on Sunday who have made their best start to a Premier League season in seven years, and are in fifth place in the table.

However, Villa were poor on Monday when they fell to defeat at Newcastle and although Martin O’Neill made six changes to the side for Thursday’s UEFA Cup win against Slavia Prague, his team have certainly had a more demanding week than Boro, who have been able to prepare without distraction for the trip to Villa Park.

It is the start of back to back away games for Boro, with Everton to follow next week. With the Premier League so tight - only six points separate Gareth Southgate’s side from fourth place but equally just three points is the margin of safety to the bottom three - it is vital that Boro get some points from Villa Park and Goodison.

Column continues below...

Boro have recorded just one away league win during 2008 to date but they do go into a spell on the road with confidence.

Their last away game was the 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers when only a last gasp Benni McCarthy header denied them a win. Before that, another journey to the North West had brought a clean sheet and three points courtesy of Jeremie Aliadiere’s late winner at Wigan.

Clearly, the return of experienced players has helped bring about the mini revival as Tuncay and Julio Arca have regained full fitness. Together with Emanuel Pogatetz completing his suspension, this has allowed Gareth Southgate to select a stronger bench and the situation looks a lot brighter.

One of the players catching the eye has been goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, who was in fantastic form against West Ham United last Saturday.

The Turnbull late double save to stop a Hammers winner was world class and on form alone, he must rank as one of the best keepers in the top flight.

All the summer concerns about the goalkeeping situation now seem a distant memory and there have even been some suggestions that Fabio Capello should take a look at Turnbull as a possible squad member for the friendly with Germany later this month.

Clearly, if the young goalkeeper keeps performing at such a high level then recognition will come but the main priority must be to ensure that he performs week in week out for Boro and then the rest will naturally follow.

Luke Young is expected to face his old club after being rested for the Slavia Prague trip and he should receive a good reception from the travelling Boro fans.

Young was only at the club for a short spell, but he was close to picking up the player of the year award last season and his time at the Riverside will be forever remembered for his terrific goal against Spurs, which was a powerful shot that flew into the top corner.

Last season’s Villa Park encounter came quickly after the horrific FA Cup exit at the hands of Cardiff and Boro had to dig deep to put in a ninety-minute display that started to heal those cup-tie wounds.

Stewart Downing looked to have won the game for Boro but a dreadful penalty decision, ironically against Luke Young, for handball allowed Gareth Barry to equalise from the spot.

Let’s hope that on Sunday, Boro can return from Villa with at least a point.

BBC Tees Sport will be live from Villa Park from 2pm and after the game, whilst Mark Drury gathers all the post match interviews, you can call Gary Gill and I on 01642 225511.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing these kind of bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers, which is highly unlikely.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these next season.
